The MLS outdraws the NHL and NBA combined now - I would say that is where they should be concentrating their efforts.

To me it seems ESPN has put too many eggs in their NFL and NBA baskets and they need to trim a ton of fat to offset their declining subscription base - these appear to be the type of cuts you make to make yourself more attractive for a sale or takeover.

and have fun with teh 2019 NBA lockout ESPN

youre talking at the gate right?

as i said above ... they look to be taking out the reporters and keeping the personalities ... its gonna get uglier to watch if a viewer is looking for any kind of depth

playoff ratings were up 94 % (in canada) over last year

NHL ratings boost gives Rogers Media something to smile about

/this article briefly mentions that bit about the aging hockey viewer I mentioned in another thread last week

The shadow over this is the changing habits of those millennial viewers, who are now a prized demographic for advertisers. A study of Nielsen ratings in the United States from 2000 to 2016 by Magna Global for the Sports Business Journal found that conventional television audiences are aging faster than the general population. In the case of the NHL, the median age of its TV viewers went from 42 to 49 from 2006 to 2016.

that "aging viewer" phenomenon is cfl like

It's across the board. NFL and MLB both dealing with it, and even in soccer Sky released numbers that are showing the same thing.

When you essentially bar young people, who already struggle with things like rent, food costs, gas/insurance/other auto costs, transit costs etc. from sports events by making prices so high that they never get to experience the product up close what makes you think they’re going to commit time (and money, because cable is ridiculously expensive now) to watching games?

On the flip, I’m really starting to think a lot of cord-cutters are finding alternate feeds and streaming from there. Shit I’m considering it myself (seriously, I pay $100/month for cable and the only thing I watch is sports and Jeopardy). If that's the case, the problem is less "young people don't like sports" and more "young people aren't paying for sports". Which is good, IMO.

TV is going the way of newspapers and magazines.
It just needs a market correction. They got too greedy and figured once people started paying a little more for it they'd be fine with paying endlessly more for it.

They'll get rid of the crap channels nobody watches, keep the higher-rated ones, lower fees and learn to adapt to the streamers and integrate with them. Otherwise, well, yeah. Newspapers and magazines.

I dont think it is in North America ... I ll try and track the actual Nielson study but they mantioned that NBA and soccer in north america werent experiencing this aging phenomenon

/the blurb in the globe kinda confirms my initial impression that its mostly about millenials consuming sports differently (ie different media / back to the cord cutting)

//The study, conducted exclusively for SportsBusiness Journal by Magna Global, looked at live, regular-season game coverage of major sports across both broadcast and cable television in 2000, 2006 and 2016. It showed that while the median age of viewers of most sports, except the WTA, NBA and MLS, is aging faster than the overall U.S. population, it is doing so at a slower pace than prime-time TV.

Going gray: Sports TV viewers skew older

I guess since the sample is so small for MLS that skews that number :noidea:

I left the NBA out on purpose. They just put on the shittiest playoffs in sports history and set ratings records lol. Ain't no stopping them right now.

Mike Johnson went back to TSN. Guessing he'll be doing the Ferraro role on Sens and Jets games on their local broadcasts?

Not his biggest fan but thought it was weird that SN let him go when they have so many worse guys doing colour.

That CBC news is both interesting and good to see. Nice to see HNIC stay on CBC until at least 2026.

I know comeds is hoping for 'Elliotte Friedman Mysteries' to become a mainstay on CBC...

As long as they keep Frankie Drake on the air, I do not care about anything else. And I do not just mean TV-wise.
