Movie theatres ARE a rip off.....
I have a new 4K TV, and have really enjoyed seeing the big movies on it.

I saw Revenant on my TV this past weekend, and the picture really was amazing. Martian was amazing as well.

I'll get one soon, but I have a hard time giving up on the 4 I already have.... (60", 50" 42" and 40").

And I really don't want to be web based for programming....

You dont HAVE to be web-based. Being web-based just opens up your options by a factor of 100.

I bought a 55" 4K and moved my 40" 720 to my bedroom (I didnt have a TV in there before). The difference in picture between the 2 TVs is night and day.

Revenant was good, that Bear attack has to be one of the best scenes in film this year, if not the best. Still felt like they could have cut 10-15 minutes off it, it felt a little too long. Plus, the story wasn't all that great, kind of basic.

Another thing, if there were a Best Actor of the Year award I would give it to Tom Hardy in a heartbeat. If you haven't seen "Legend" and you have free time you should give it a shot. Fun flick. He was amazing in that as well as Revenant. I'd probably give him Best Supporting Actor for the Revenant as well. Guy's just an amazing character actor.

I thought 4K material was web based, cause I know my cable provider doesn't provide it.

Either way, my 4 plasma units are all fully functional and wonderful still.

The big one is 8 years old. It's the longest I've ever gone without buying a new main TV.

And I've owned a lot of TVs.

My wife sits waiting for me to do something.

Not patiently, but with a feeling of inevitability about it.

I'm thinking 80"?

Go big or go home.

I never had a 1080, so I can't compare the image I get now to that, but the 4K compared to my 720 is amazing.

I believe there needs to be a 4K signal from your TV to see an improvement from that signal, but BluRay and streaming can get you the 4K quality now. In the future, there will be 4K signal from cable as well. This is where the tech is going.

I mentioned in the Revenant thread that I thought Hardy deserves at least a nom for it.

I have not seen Legend, but I have heard he is amazing in it.

I know where it's going but for all the wrong reasons.

I am a huge TV watcher, come by it honestly, genetics. My paternal grandfather was the 2nd TV owner in our town. I think it was a 9 incher? Big mother. They even had a big magnifying lens you could put in front of it.....

I've ridden all TV tech changes for the last "my lifetime".

But I'm waiting for now.

How are you watching 'Revenant' in true HD at home? I call shenanigans, unless you work in the industry somehow. Or are a reviewer or something.

My guess is he got his hands on a screener copy. They're pretty easy to get on the internet nowadays. DVD quality normally available before the movie even comes out in theaters.

Of those listed I've seen Star Wars, Ex Machina, The Martian, and Mad Max.

The Martian and Ex Machina were both excellent but I'd give a slight edge to The Martian for best of the bunch.

Star Wars was really good and got better on the second viewing but I don't think it's the best film of the year. Mad Max was pretty average.

It wasn't bad or anything, just way too much hype. I went in hearing how it was the best action movie in the history of ever and to me it didn't do anything to separate itself from every other action movie where people die and shit blows up for 2 hours.
