OKAY !!!

Geez, people are naming frikkin multiple oscar nominees and I get called out for Kutcher ? :gaah:
Someone like Cage, who is a nominee (I think??) makes the list because after Face/Off, he basically just quit trying. He became a caricature of himself after that movie.

Cage won for Leaving Las Vegas and he deserved it.

Raising Arizona
Moonstruck
Red Rock West
Matchstick Men
Adaptation
The Bad Lieutenant

and several more

He's been very good in a lot of good to great flicks. He's been very bad in a lot, too, and has been in it strictly for the payday for years. But "worst actor of all time" ? Not even remotely close. That's just silly.

I consider Hanks the best actor ever. Cast Away, alone, puts him AT LEAST in the discussion.

But ICONIC?

I am not sure he is there yet. to me, "iconic" includes some eccentric-ness, and Hanks is more of a chameleon. I would not describe him as eccentric at all. I would consider Depp more iconic, and I am not a fan of him at all.

Iconic is Leo. And it's gonna keep going.

Every project this guy has lined up is insane.

Marlon Brando and Clint Eastwood are really the only ones who might be considered as iconic in the 20th century.

Jimmy Stewart resume is pretty great

Anatomy of Murder
Harvey
It's a Wonderful Life
Rear Window
Mr.Smith Goes to Washington
The Man who shot Liberty Valance
Vertigo
The Philadelphia Story
Rope
Destry Rides again
You Can't take it with you
The Shop around the corner

The actor Cary Grant said of Stewart's acting technique:

He had the ability to talk naturally. He knew that in conversations people do often interrupt one another and it's not always so easy to get a thought out. It took a little time for the sound men to get used to him, but he had an enormous impact. And then, some years later, Marlon came out and did the same thing all over again—but what people forget is that Jimmy did it first.

I had to go with Seagal. With the single exception of Under Siege his movies border from really bad to downright unwatchable.

The last one I watched was a few years ago called Against the Dark where he is part of a specialist hit squad sent to kill a zombie hoard in a deserted hospital. Seagal is wearing a black overcoat that he can barely button up because of his weight. The team runs around killing z's but whenever they cut to Seagal he is weezing along about half the speed of the rest of the team but somehow still managing to keep up at the front of the action!

It doesn't take much to be an action star, but keeping in at least halfway decent shape should be a prerequisite.

Some really bad actors on this list. I used to think that all of the 80s action stars were quite bad but Seagal actually managed to set himself apart in infamy and managed to surpass Schwarzenegger , Stallone, Lundgren, and even the horrible Van Damme in his level of consistent badness.

I'm not crazy with this poll.

I am not going to pick an action film star or comedy film star, as those two categories are niche fields of work.... .... so as a few others have stated in this thread, I will go with someone who tries to be a 'serious' actor. The problem with the poll is that four of the worst 'serious' actors in existence are not included in the poll:

Hayden Christensen
Ashton Kutcher
Orlando Bloom
Gerard Butler

So, I had to go with the 'other' selection of the poll.

Another problem with the poll is that it includes John Travolta.....yikes! Travolta is one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood! He can do serious drama very well... he can do comedy sorta OK... he can do action films pretty well.... he can sing.... he can dance, and thus can do musicals pretty well... he portrays nice guys very well, and he is a very good villain!

Watch the following films and then realize how talented Travolta is:

Pulp Fiction
Michael
Phenomenon
Primary Colors
The Thin Red Line
The Taking of Pelham 123
Ladder 49
The Punisher
Swordfish
The General's Daughter
A Civil Action

Travolta is not a great actor, but his versatility/range is quite impressive... he is certainly not a bad actor!

Some actors can't rise above bad material. Nic Cage can't. But give him a good script (Leaving Las Vegas), and he can be pretty damned good.

Some actors can be pretty damned good if they have a script tailored FOR them, (Stallone, Shwarz etc)

Some actors have been great, but are awful in awful movies (Al Pacino lately)

I guess if I had to pick someone who never could do anything but one thing it would be Andrew Dice Clay, who isn't good even when playing himself. Pretty low hanging fruit though.
