Hindsight is always 20/20 but hey, send over your resume. Couldn't hurt.

Indeed. Make sure to list on 'additional skills' that you're a daily WalMart shopper and shareholder, and buy your clothes from WalMart for the interview. I'd give Wolvs a 82% chance of success to land the job with this brilliant move. @Wolverine830872 make sure to hire some of us Hooplans, I want the food and beverage manager position!

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the Broncos have informed Russell Wilson he will be released.
The release of Wilson ends one of the more disappointing quarterback tenures in recent memory. Acquired from the Seahawks in exchange for two first-round draft picks, a second-round draft pick, a fifth-round pick, and players, Wilson was the presumed answer to the Broncos’ years-long quarterback woes in a post-Peyton Manning era. He immediately signed a five-year, $242 million contract extension with the Broncos shortly after being acquired, which included $161 million in guaranteed money. Interestingly, the first year of Wilson’s deal was set to kick in at the start of 2024, but he’ll now be playing elsewhere while earning roughly $39 million in guaranteed money from the Broncos. In two seasons with the Broncos, Wilson threw for 6594-42-19, with the team going 11-19 in his starts. Still a more-than-capable starter; there are several teams who could elevate their passing game by signing Wilson, who should have a nice market. Wilson’s release will become official when the new league year starts on March 13th. If Wilson is designated as a post-June 1st cut, he will count as a $35.4 million dead cap hit in 2024 and a $49.6 million dead cap hit in 2025, per Spotrac.com.

There are potential trade options open to teams that want to move players with guaranteed contracts. If the team and trade market deem the player isn't worth the money in their contract the team can eat the guarantee and cut the player or agree terms with a trading team where the new team absorbs as much as they are willing to pay and the trading team eats eats the rest. Mayfield's contract with the Browns was an example of this.

That situation shouldn't happen with Wilson and the Broncos. This is the situation as per Spotrac:

Wilson is fully guaranteed the $124M due to be earned during the 1st 3 years of his Broncos contract. The Broncos can get out of the contract at that cost at any time up to the 5th league day of 2024, (IE before the 3rd playing season starts). At that point the Broncos will fully guarantee the $37M in Wilson's 4th year. Effectively it's $124M for 2 years with an option for 2 more years at a combined $37M. Those are the cut/keep points for non-trade options. Assuming his play doesn't fall off a cliff and there isn't a team/player rift it's 4 years at $161M. Obviously the Broncos wouldn't be paying him $124M if they traded him between years 2 & 3.
Me and my big mouth. Making assumptions about not falling off a cliff or a team/player rift. Oh well. I hope Broncos fans enjoyed the 2 years for $124M.

I don't think a trade happens if there wasn't assurances for a new contract. The Broncos swung and missed. Not more complicated than that.
I suppose that's possible, but then wouldn't you announce the extension contemporaneous with the trade? The extension happened some time later

It would technically be the most rational, but people seldom operate this way in the real world for idiosyncratic reasons. If you want a Occam's razor here, it's that the Broncos do not want to be known as a cheap organization that leans one way and fails to do another. That has its own consequences. Working out the language of a contract takes time.

Part of the tension in Seattle was regarding Russ wanting a new contract, no?

He has already shown signs that he's on the decline. His size and his game doesn't age well in the NFL.

That take is from back when I still sort of liked Russ and thought it was a bad idea.

Now he's just damaged goods with a huge ego. I really hope the Vikings stay away from him.

But, mainly because Payton came in as the new HC with a chip on his shoulder.

Depends on when they schedule the game, week 1 it’ll be Russ, later on it could be Fields for all we know. We don’t know how much of a leash they’re going to give Russ.

Just really for this year. With Denver taking the majority of the hit this year and next year the cap going up again it‘s not really a crippling situation.
Don't forget all the draft picks the Broncos gave up for him
