Hasn't even seen how he plays in the new offense?

Means he will be 40 when the contract is over if he plays it all out?

165 mill is guaranteed.

Vote and discuss.

He has already shown signs that he's on the decline. His size and his game doesn't age well in the NFL.
but to play devil's advocate. This is by far the best line he has ever had. Could help with his longevity.

Nature of the business. The NFL is banking on fans not only continuing to tune in, but to increase in number. Other pro sports have long contracts with tons of guaranteed money; the NFL is just trying to stay relevant.

No they wont regret it. They have a top QB. That's the price you pay them. Pretty easy. Way better than having to try and find a good one in the draft.

don't kid yourself, the league had zero choice with regards to superstars and guaranteed money.
Players League was just a matter of time and the only thing to keep it from being baseball or worse, the NBA is roster size

He’s like the 6 highest paid QB it’s not like they gave him number one money, and let’s say people are right and he’s on the decline, a declining Russell Wilson is still miles better than A) anyone out there in free agency, B) better than any of the quarterbacks drafted this year, and C) better than any of the quarterbacks they could’ve drafted the past few years.

Now will this still be a good deal in 3 years? We’ll have to wait and see but also in three years this contract probably won’t even be in the top 10 for highest paid QB’s so unless he completely falls off a cliff like Manning did in his final year it’ll still be a good deal.

This right here. Wilson had all the leverage in the world to demand the biggest contract ever handed out to a QB. Instead he took what I would consider an in line with his talent type contract that should only get surpassed quite a few times before the deal would be over. Throw in the guarantees came in so much lower than expected after Watson got his huge deal. Gives the Broncos a lot of room to work with cap manipulation wise if/when they need to do some of that.

Their options are: Extend Wilson, knowing there's risk and downside.

OR

Willingly allow Mahomes and Herbert play paddy cake for like 15 years.

Kind of a no-brainer for Denver. Even the timing is fine.

Would have to see the yearly breakout. The signing bonus was $50M so that's $10M of dead cap every year... I would assume given that contract they fully expect Wilson to play through all 5 years but it's only $160M guaranteed.. so it may be that he's easy to cut in year 4-5 if he gets injury prone or slow.

Yes he'll have a better offensive line, but Wilson generated a lot of pressure/sacks and made his OL look not that great because he hangs onto the ball SOOOOO long and refuses to use the middle of the field. I think if he can work and fix 1) Dropping way too far back, 2) Almost a refusal to operate under center unless it's a hard playaction, 3) holding onto the ball WAY too long - then it'll be worth it. And I'm not saying the OL terrible play at times was ALL Wilson's fault. Far from it, but he does have an impact.

His mobility is not what it once was... in the past he could ignore 1-3 because he had one of the best deep balls in the league and could extend plays by making defenders miss.

I'll vote maybe. Wilson is a hard worker so he may very well go to a new offense/scene and fix some of those things. If he doesn't and just keeps playing like he is, I fully expect fans/analysts, etc. saying Wilson needs better protection or "Why does Denver's OL suck now?" by midseason.

For Denver the contract is about as good as they could have hoped for. Clearly RW didn't try to break the bank on this deal. Still the Broncos have yet to see him in action playing for them and it is a sizable contract they have committed to. Now at 34 RW is much younger then Tom Brady but Brady is not the norm, mid 30's is the later stages of QBs career and where you see decline happening more rapidly. You don't see QBs in their 30s extend plays with their legs, which was something RW was famous for, that is now a thing of the past for the most part.

Yep. And he took a lot of hits behind that Seattle OL.

He took a lot of hits, but many were the results of not using his blockers and leaving the pocket at even a hint of pressure. Be interesting to see how it works in Denver.

I know.

Think the 1st year is an adjustment to a new team, coach and offense and then they have a 2-3 window to make a run. And by the time he's 37-38 but the last few seasons could be ugly.

I know Russ wants to get paid, but if he wants another title taking up a big percentage of the teams cap doesn’t help you get there … Brady was smart, he’s still rich enough and has a hand full of rings taking way less money than he could have …

Brees played until 41, Rivers 38, Matt Ryan ks 37, Rodgers is coming off back to back MVP seasons and is 38. And Russ takes better care of his body than all those guys so if he starts to really decline at 38 that gives Denver 4 good years. Russ can be a pocket passer so he may night be able to make runs like Lamar can but he’s still the best deep ball passer in the league.

Plus within the next 2 years Herbert, Lamar, and Burrow will all be signing huge contracts meaning this deal is going to look great by comparison.

Yes they "played" until those ages but the decline was well in advance of the retirement date, several years in fact ( which is why they retired). RW hasn't been a pocket passer and his biggest asset was being able to buy time, but that ability is pretty much gone.
