How did this guy put up such amazing OBP with seemingly limited power and speed? Usually you have to have one of those two things. He was like an early Wade Boggs prototype.

OBP is (H + BB + HBP) / (AB + BB + HBP + SF). As long as you can hit singles, you don't need power for a good OBP. Cunningham had a pretty good career AVG at .291. He also walked every 6.8 PA while Boggs walked every 7.6 PA. I would say one needs good plate discipline and be a good contact hitter to have a good OBP. Power and speed can help, but are not necessary.

Yeah not necessary but it's extremely hard to have a .400 lifetime OBP without some power. He must have had incredible plate discipline. His career was shorter, but he had a .403 lifetime OBP. That's higher than guys like Tony Gwynn, Rod Carew, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron and many many other great players.

A .126 ISO is low, but not that low. Max Bishop had a .095 ISO, but he had a .423 OBP on a .271 BA (140 walks per 162). Ferris Fain (that name will always remind me of JR_Hart from the ESPN boards) had a .106 ISO, but had a .424 OBP

I'll always be fond of Bengie Molina's 2009 season just because he had a higher BA than OBP until May 12th. It's pretty incredible seeing a player with a BA hovering around their OBP around the All-Star Break. Finished the season at .265/.285/.442 (87 OPS+), walking a whopping 13 times in 520 PA. 2.5% walk rate.
