To each their own, but in fairness, the Grateful Dead is all about improv so there really wouldn't be any reason to play a song the same way twice. Same goes for Miles Davis, Weather Report, Coltrane, et al.
Fair enough. That's just not my cup of tea. When I go to a concert I want to hear the songs as I know them. That's what was so remarkable about the Eagles; they could reproduce their sound to almost studio quality; especially the vocals, those were brilliant.

The Grateful dead sucked, and continue to suck.

Horrible music.
I didn't want to go that far because music is all about taste but they definitely were not my preference.

Damn, it's been a few years since I engaged in any of those shenanigans. I need to bring my chops up to speed and drop a little 'cid or some 'shrooms.

Well for those of you who don't care much for the DEAD, that's your opinion. I myself have seen well over 500 concerts in my life, every genre and all types of bands ( except of course Hendrix, Beatles and Joplin )
There is nothing like a DEAD concert, it's an experience not a show like say Iron Maiden or Alice Cooper. It's not a concert like ELP or Genisis or ELO.
Theatrics?, today maybe Rob Zombie and still Iron Maiden.
Zeppy and the Stones don't fair too well live. Maybe the best and thinking about it, Pink Floyd. Super studio band and just as well live. Best concert I ever went to Dark Side of the Moon and followed by Pigs.
Others are worthy of high accolades but Floyd combined theatrics, sound with studio quality.

This is as close as you can get to seeing the Beatles play. They're amazing. The look like em' and play the songs nearly note for note. I saw them in 2014 and I'll see them again a few months. The Paul MCartney is even left-handed.

I guess jazz fusion doesn't fit into the rock category.

I'm certainly with ya on the Beatles but your list is all British? What about The Eagles?

Wasn't really thinking of nationality. Just bands that have multiple dozens of hits and large music libraries that are well known...

Black Sabbath
ACDC
Pink Floyd
Judas Priest

Sabbath albums 1-4 and Priests Sad Wings of Destiny album created the blue print for Metal and are required listening and learning for anyone who wants to play hard rock or metal music. They're the foundation of that entire genre. The fact they put out as many influential and historical albums as they did cements their inclusion in the top 5.

Bands like Beatles and Stones would make my top 10.
