I'm sure this discussion has been had umpteen times here, but sort of fishing for opinions here... I think there's a blatantly obvious four that have to belong in any and every list... Those being in no particular order :

The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
The Who

I seem to have a tough time coming up with a fifth... Who am I missing? Or do you really want to make a case that one of these four don't belong?

Music seems to be pretty generational. Unless you put some pretty tight parameters as guidelines, I think to a large degree you will be able to dictate to within a small margin of error the posters age by their selection. Some great choices up there to be sure. I could bark off my personal 5 fav's in 15 seconds, but man, of all time I'm lost.

Joshua Tree was pretty good back when it came out. Other than that I agree.

Beach Boys & Grateful Dead most overrated bands of all time IMO...

Joshua tree was a "catchy" pop album. Good album, that apparently was great enough to make them instant icons. I loathe their sound.

Beach boys are before my time of giving af...the Dead are about the experience. They are some of the first civilians to willingly take LSD, and then subsequently were a huge part of making sure everyone else tried it as well. That history alone, makes them pretty badass IMO, and gives em a pass. They got some songs I like that are not their "popular" radio tunes.

If I hear the Dead I don't turn it. I agree it has to be about the experience because there wasn't much else there, the Beach Boys I will turn and they were before my time as well but they have/had a huge fanbase it seems, I don't get it, There are a lot of bands that have a lot of their tunes that sound the same but seriously how many songs do we need about driving your car to the beach?

I guess if we are talking about experience KISS should be listed as well, seen them a few times and loved it, when KISS first came out I was like 6 years old I loved them, all my friends at school thought I worshiped satan or somethin... They were all still obviously listening to Captain & Tennille...
