How to Keep Windows 10 From 'Spying' on You

Despite what you may have read, Windows 10 is not spying on everything you do. So feel free to remove your tin-foil beanie.

However, Windows 10 could potentially collect a ton of data about you — probably more personal information than any operating system in history. That’s due largely to Cortana, Win10’s built-in personal digital assistant, which collects such information to better serve you. But Windows 10 also collects information to make other aspects of your computing experience more personal.

The good news: If that data collection creeps you out, you can turn off all or any of it with a few clicks. It’s not hard, though some of the settings can be confusing or difficult to find.

Here’s a quick guide to the most important privacy controls in Windows 10 — whether you should worry about them and how to tweak them. (Note: You may need to log in as an administrator to make some of these changes.)

How to go private in Windows 10
It all starts with the Settings. If you’ve got a tablet or touchscreen laptop, tap the right side of the screen and swipe toward the left to call up the Action Center, then choose All Settings.

The Opera browser is all messed up on Windows 10, most sites don't load correctly at all. At first I thought it was Ghostery (the ad blocker I use for Opera and Firefox) but disabling Ghostery didn't fix the problem. Guess I'll just have to wait and see if there is an update soon to Opera.

No issues with Chrome at all and I'm using it on 3 machines that have been upgraded to 10.

I did get my first BSOD on here just a few minutes ago though. Still blue, but a bit more modern?

Considering how much software I have on this unit (at work) and how much was open I shouldn't be surprised. I'm sure it's the first of many such conflicts until this thing is ready for prime time.

Hardware related? Really haven't had one of those since I started running Windows 7. I only have piece of software that hasn't been updated since XP but it worked fine on Windows 7 (it's a little database app for my model railroad and if it does die no big loss as I can design one with LibreOffice Base).

Windows 10 has been pretty smooth so far. I've had zero issues since the install & after I customized it to my liking. I am still using chrome for now. I'll give edge a shot later once it ready for prime time. I'll probably wait another week or two before I install it on my laptop.

So far I find windows 10 to be alright. Changed to a local account and turn off most all tracking in settings, even added a antivirus so defender would shut off. Doing a scan now....mmmm showing two threats so far. Using Eset trial
For now.

You mean deferred? Means you will just have more to updates when you do finally do it probably. You still get security updates regardless.
Yes deferred. Means I can wait to hear if there are problems with a update, right?

No, just means when you do get an update they might be fixed though. I went ahead and applied the update...can't tell any difference. Haven't looked to see what patches were applied though.

I've now installed it on 4 machines total: 2 at home and 2 for testing at work.
1 BSOD yesterday on my primary work machine and I haven't identified what software caused it, but that machine had 1,310 events in the administrative log in the first 24 hours. Other than those, it runs fine and nothing failed to work.
Second work computer I put it on for testing today was also great, but Kaspersky has issues updating on it. I eventually had to uninstall the upgraded version, hand turn off Windows Defender, and reinstall Kaspersky from scratch. Didn't have to do any of that the day before on our other machine.

I'll say to those still looking at doing their upgrade, don't click express settings. Go item by item and pretty much turn off everything in the options screen. Read them all and consider them for yourself. Most of the things people talk about with invasion of privacy can be disabled before you even install it.

My Opera browser updated yesterday. You might want to take a look and see if that helped. I still don't have Windows 10 on any of my computers yet but I saw in the news that it had a pretty big update come out yesterday.

I had an issue with yesterday's update. It kept timing out with the error code 0x800705b4. After a little research, I ended having to manually update window defender first to fix the problem. Once I did that, the update worked as usual.

Hell, I can't the computer at my service desk to upgrade from 8 to 8.1 in order to get 10. Tried to do a refresh and the sumbitch won't do that either.

download the upgrade to 10 and put it on either a DVD or thumbdrive and do the upgrade from there.

You have to successfully do an upgrade in one form or another before it will let you do a fresh install.

Everytime I try to install 8.1 it stops at 87% and gives me error code 0x80070004. I've tried everything I can find online and nothing works. Some said to do a system refresh where it will re-install windows but not affect my files and that it should do the trick. It gets almost done with the refresh but stops and says it encountered a problem and couldn't finish and undoes the changes it made. I got my wife and son's laptops upgraded with no issues but this sumbitch is driving me crazy.
