Not bad for a 3rd QB, considering the lack of options. Really interesting that the 49ers wanted to bring him in right after the lockout.

BTW, what was Kristick's injury in the Chargers game, he was the guy carted off the field, wasn't he?

It was an ankle sprain. Not sure what type though. It was a logical pick considering Constanzo is a core special teams player and Kristick still eligible for PS

The thing I love the most about this guy, he's got a decently quick release while being extremely accurate. He doesn't have a HUGE arm, but he is dead accurate with it. The play that comes to mind is him throwing 30+ yds down the right sideline, dropping that ball over the shoulder of the WR right into his hands against us in IIRC the 3rd quarter.

Great news about Tolzien; I'm excited about this pickup by the Niners. I was surprised the Chargers let him go.

Another player the Chargers cut we should look at is WR Seyi Ajirotutu; he looked good late last season.

Welcome to SportsHoopla retech.

His pass @ 2:45 over Culliver was impressive. Culliver had good coverage, but the placement was perfect. pretty sure it's the one you are talking about.

That was EXACTLY the play I was thinking about. I remembered great coverage and an even greater throw....it was put right in place. Tolzien also has, IMO, a quicker release then both Smith and Kap. I'm by no means advocating that he be our starter, but I would LOVE to see him be our backup as a slightly developmental QB that just needs some time understanding Harbaugh's playbook.

The pass @ 3:11 isn't too shabby either.

Sopoaga didn't contain the outside on Mathews' TD run; he tried to sneak inside.

Culliver let the Robinson get past him around 2:14 as well on a 30 or so yard pass, but the safety (Spillman) didn't exactly get over extremely quickly. Perfect pass by Rivers of course.

Rivers sat out against us, I think the 2:14 pass was Tolzien as well.

The nice thing about this signing is that teams won't be beating down McCown's door, so we can pick him up if something happens to Alex, neither Kaep or Tolzien are ready and we're still in the race for the division.

It's why I've always been in favour of carrying just two QBs, but carrying Smith and two young guys serves the same purpose.

Here is an interesting footnote on Tolzien:

Tolzien was recruited to Wisconsin offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Paul Chryst, the brother of 49ers quarterbacks coach Geep Cryst.

Is it wrong to be more excited about picking up Tolzien than I was about drafting Kaepernick?

No, it's not. By this time next year I expect Tolzein to be way ahead of Kaepernick. Tolzein could very well be starting by the end of the season.

I think people are really starting to overrate Tolzein.

If you told me 6 months ago, the number one QB topic on the board would be Tolzein, I would have asked "How long have you been smoking crack?" Now, it's kind of refreshing.

Then: Smith, Carr, Smith.
After the lockout ended, my prediction was: Hass, Smith, Kap
Now: Smith, Kap, Tolzein.

I don't think our QB position is anywhere near stable and/or resolved, but I'll take what we have vs. what we HAD.

Telling you, play against our D and you'll get a new fat contract lol..

Nothing big here IMO, but a 3rd QB with something to show if the even of the other 2 were to fall.

Well, I like the idea of Tolzien being the 49ers 3rd QB. Much better than veteran washouts like McCown or Culpepper. The kid definitely showed some potential in Thursday's game.

Oh, interesting, Wisconsin's offensive coordinator is Geep's brother.

Tolzien starred in WCO under brother of 49ers QB Coach (San Francisco Chronicle)

Hey, Three, I always scan threads in an effort to avoid duplicate posting and I am just now noticing that I missed this one -my bad. That said, however, it is not surprising that we both found this interesting.
