ICYMI:

Josh Byrnes on possible trades: "Rentals no longer make sense"

This would mean Matt Garza is not on the shopping list ... a number of other pitchers who could still make sense if the Padres opt to look for a rotation upgrade who would be a part of the mix next year when they start to welcome the likes of LHP Cory Luebke and RHPs Casey Kelly and Joe Wieland back to the staff:

Astros RHP Bud Norris – Making $3 million this year; not eligible for free agency until 2016.
Brewers RHP Yorvani Gallardo – Will make $11.25 million next year, with a $13 million club option in 2015.
Brewers RHP Kyle Lohse – Will make $11 million in 2014 and 2015.
Mariners RHP Hisashki Iwakumi – Will make $6.5 million in 2014 with $7 million club option in 2015
Twins RHP Kevin Correia – Will make $5.5 million in 2014.

Has anyone heard if Sean O'Sullivan is going to stay in the rotation?

as of this writing ... #59 Sean O'Sullivan (RHP) has been designated a Relief Pitcher on the 40 man roster along with #56 Colt Hynes (LHP). I would not get comfortable with them on the 25 man roster as the carousel that is our BP and Starting rotation in nowhere near done spinning.

The Padres will play 32 of their final 66 games against NL West opponents – 10 against the Diamondbacks and Giants and six against the Dodgers and Rockies. We'll either be in it to win it or playing spoiler.

O'Sullivan was really laboring in his start so I hope he fares better as a reliever. It was great to see a life-long San Diego resident and fan of the Padres actually playing for the team. If you saw Kelly Crull interviewing his Dad, they seem like a top-notch family. I wish that game had gone better for him and hopefully he learned allot. He has heat so maybe he'll do better as a reliever and be there for long relief if Stauffer isn't available or needs a night off or if we're in a garbage situation.

Very nice to hear. I can't tell you how much I hate all the interleague games. While playing Tampa Bay, Toronto, Baltimore and Boston, we could have been playing NL West opponents in games that really matter!

I hope we can bury the Giants and beat up on the D-backs a little. If the Pads aren't going to do it, I have to throw in with LA.

The Padres have an opportunity to bring back San Diego native Kevin Correia ... not the best move (he used to play for the Padres a few years back before we traded him) as far as increasing the level of our play, but (and I get tired of saying this) he is no worse than anyone on the roster already

Heard about this and I'd rather see us bring up a prospect to be honest.

Also, we have a new lineup tonight.

Excited to see what Headley can do in the second half and if he can at least draw some walks.

I'm going to start a series thread for the Cards. Anyone who's interested, let's try to breathe some life into this board.

The Padres placed Jason Marquis on the 15-day disabled list with an elbow strain Sunday morning – possibly marking the end to both the right-handed pitcher’s season and his career with the Padres.

The injury in Marquis’s elbow appears to be in the neighborhood of the ulnar collateral ligament, which typically requires “Tommy John” reconstruction surgery to repair.

There will be two adjustments to the Padres rotation:
Right-hander Tyson Ross will rejoin the Padres from Tucson Monday and start Tuesday night’s game in Milwaukee.
Right-hander Sean O’Sullivan is expected to slot into Marquis’s next scheduled spot on Wednesday night in Milwaukee.

Man oh man, our rotation has really taken a hit this season (not that it was top notch to start off with). Offensively we just don't seem to take advantage of men in scoring position consistently. We've got so many holes to fill......

Too bad we couldn't have traded him before this happened! :gaah:

I guess I'm happy for Sean O'Sullivan but anxious about it. He was sure gassed after his first start. Does that mean he'd start on Thursday?

O'Sullivan starts Wednesday

Add to that idea that both Gregerson and Street are on the trade block (along with Volquez)

As far as offense ... we need to get a solid lineup some at bats maybe they will come around :noidea:

All four starters got the job done. No complaints at all.

Pitchers Cory Luebke and Joe Wieland probably won’t pitch for the Padres during the 2013 season.

“It’s unlikely that we will see them in a major league game this season,” Black said of Luebke and Wieland, who are both rehabilitating from Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery.

Both have suffered not-unexpected setbacks during their rehab.

The left-handed Luebke twice had his throwing program halted this season when he experienced discomfort in his elbow. Luekbe is again throwing from a slope.

The right-handed Wieland recently suffered a triceps strain and isn’t currently throwing.

No sense putting those guys in a game this season. I am confident in our chances of having a strong rotation in '14.

Cashner & Ross are a good start. It's too bad Brynes traded Latos.:mad2:

Latos could have been the difference in us taking the division this year. Imagine if we could have replaced all the 5th men in our rotation all season long with Latos. :bawling:
