Our rookie punter, Sam Martin, has won the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Not bad for his third career start...

Considering he actually made the team is a miracle in itself. Even if he is just a punter. Didn't he kick the ball out of bounds at the end of the Skins game on that kick off that gave them the ball on the 40 or was that Akers?

Gotta ask why here? He was drafted in the 5th round which means, for a punter, the Lions thought highly of him. Our punting unit has been complete shit the last few years. Now we have a seemingly good young punter and all of a sudden it's "a miracle he made the team"?

I guess I don't understand your logic on this one.

Because guys Mayhew usually drafts with late round picks don't make the team or contribute. There's Willie Young and.........Sam Martin I guess. Can't think of anyone else.

I think that if you applied that filter to every GM out there you would hate them all except for the Packers. No GM hits often in the late round, MAyhew has not been great, but I don't think he has been noticably worse in the late rounds either. He has far fewer hits in the middle round and that is a bigger concern, but over all the team he took over has way more talent then it started with.

I have to agree here -- as much as I dislike Mayhew -- 5th, 6th and 7th round picks rarely come in and have an impact on the field and a lot of them don't even make the 53 man roster.

Mayhew's biggest issue is -- he has been terrible drafting in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds. If Mayhew was more successful with those draft picks -- Detroit would be in a much better position right now.

I think if Detroit stays healthy this year -- they could hang with anyone. Injuries are a common in the NFL and the place the Lions lack is in the depth department at quite a few positions.

That's fine and all, except that Martin wasn't drafted with others in is way of a starting job. It wasn't hard for him to make the team in that aspect. However, he's obviously shown he has the ability to be a good young starting punter that also gives us the ability to boot kickoffs out of the endzone.

So the "shock" of him making the team shouldn't really be there, IMO.

Nevermind looked it up a 72 yard punt and five punts of 50 yards or more? Geezus now if only he could kick field goals...maybe he can? We need to start a cut akers bandwagon.

Wait, so you agree with him that Mayhew sucks at drafting in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds, but you disagree with me that Mayhew sucks at drafting in the 5th, 6th and 7th rounds??

I think that most agree that 5th,6th, and 7th rounders are a crapshoot no matter who picks them.

I disagree. If you scour NFL rosters you will notice most teams are littered with starters from all rounds, including the late rounds. Not the Lions. When Schwartz was in TN, his defense was known for having several very good starters taken in the late rounds, including some undrafted FA's. But that never carried over to the Lions.

Suh - 1st
Fairely - 1st
Ansah - 1st
Jones - FA

Levy - 3rd
Tulloch - FA
Palmer - late round but terrible and he's our 3rd LB

Houston - FA
Mathis - FA staring over 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th round picks

Delmas - 2nd
Quin - FA

Not one defensive stater taken beyond round 3. And the one guy who was taken in round 3, everyone hates.

Staff - 1st

Bush - FA
Bell - FA

Calvin - 1st
Nate - FA
Broyles - 2nd

Pettigrew - 1st

Reiff - 1st
Sims - FA
Ravioli - 1st
Warford - 3rd he looks ok so far
Fox/Hilliard - 4th/FA I believe

So we got Fox and Warford . A 3rd and a 4th rounder on O.

Not one single starter taken after round 3 (4th if you count Fox).

I know you do, that is why I said most. I don't see your post giving all of the late round success you think is there for other teams.

Why do I have to do everyone's research for them? I showed you how the Titans were able to do it with Schwartz but the Lions can't. So if you still disagree, prove me wrong.

Packers do have a bunch of 4th round to undrafted players on the O-line, but that line is one of the worst in the league. Low round pick on the RB, 2 2nds at the receiver, 1st on QB, 3rd on the TE.

3 1st round picks at LB one late round pick, 2 1sts and one late round pick on the Dline with a 1st round pick being 3rd on the depth chart. 3 undrafted FA in the secondary. Do they get credit for not drafting those players? I am not sure how that is decided

So the Packers do have more, but not a ton more, and a lot of those late picks went towards one of the weakest units in football.

Yeah why bother getting actual facts to support your argument, that is for everyone else.

I've already presented the facts. The Lions have 0 starters taken after round 3 (and only 1 taken in round 3) while the majority of NFL teams do (including the Packers as you now know by looking). Feel free to verify my facts about the Titans too.
