Yeah, I don't know about authoritiii's statement that "out of the blue teams make it quite often." Make it to what? Surely not the national championship game...it's pretty much like you said, it's the same limited number of teams with a legit shot every year.

After week 3 last year Auburn wasn't even ranked and FSU was ranked around #10.

The year before that, No one had ND in final game, and No one had Auburn in 2010.

And I doubt anyone picked two teams from the same conference in 2011.

every time these things come out this early its always who is ever ranked in the top 4 at the time and its rarely what happens.

Vanderbilt
Northwestern
Iowa State
Kentucky
Illinois
South Carolina
Purdue
Cal-Berkeley
Texas Tech
Mississippi State
North Carolina State
Minnesota

And those are just a few from the P5 conferences, we're not even including the MWC, Sun Belt, AAC, Conference USA, or MAC teams, of which we know almost none of them have any shot of sniffing the playoffs -- or even a "major" bowl game in any given year.

Evidently you meant something else when you said "out of the blue," but it still seems like the same handful of teams that play for the title year in and year out.

It's why I don't get too bent over the rankings this time of year. I expect people to assume that teams like Ohio State, Bama, and Oklahoma are going to be good until proven otherwise. And recently that has extended to some other squads like Oregon, Michigan State, and Baylor.

If I know my B1G teams, it shows TEN in the bowls. TEN.

He even has 0-3 Fresno State in a bowl game, with a defense that has given up over 160 points in three games, each game over 50.
