How long until Peyton Manning is a head coach somewhere? Or will he go the John Elway route and take on a more executive-type role?

I think he'll be a Exec/GM before he even considers coaching

Elite players seldom become head coaches in any sport. Front office or ownership is probably more his speed.

Yeah I'm guessing FO. I think it was Bill Polian was telling a story that in Peyton's off time he would watch college film on prospects and then turn in his reports to him. He would also do this at the Pro Bowl every year to be scouting the FA's for the next season making recommendations on who they should bring in. I think he would just love the complexity of trying to build a championship roster.

I agree. I think he loves the game and is way too smart and respected to not be back in some capacity soon! But as mentioned before, legends of his stature don't often become Head Coaches so i agree that that's probably unlikely. Although, if a legend was going to do it I can see him being the exception!

Oh I could see him wanting to but I honestly think he would get burned out as a coach. The players just won't love the game as much as he does. I've never seen a player that loved this game so much and just truly lived and breath it every second of his life. He would expect that of his players and well we know that won't happen.
At least in the FO he would be a bit more behind the scenes where he can just lock himself in a room and watch college film all day and love every minute of it.

Peyton Manning was asked about this a few year ago. He said he would like to coach but has no aspirations of being a head coach. He mentioned being a QB coach at the college level.

Less stress and hours working. Get to teach them young rather than trying to fix mistakes they have learned.

Agree he would be better in an exec role. Does not seem to have the badass personality needed for HC.

Yeah the best player who became a head coach was probably Singletary unless I'm missing someone.

Maybe in the NFL. In the NBA you have Bird, Magic, Isaiah Thomas, Bill Russell, Lenny Wilkens, and maybe a few more but it's still pretty rare. MLB there are hardly any...Frank Robinson is about the best I can come up with off the top. Mattingly.

I think you are missing a few. Art Shell had a HOF career then was the Head Coach of the Raiders for a while.
Mike Munchak is another that was an incredible player being a 10-time All Pro selection then became HC of the Titans for a while.

Forrest Gregg was an 8-time All Pro OT in the NFL.

And of course the legend himself Mike Ditka being the first TE ever inducted into the HOF as a player then turning Head Coach and winning a Super Bowl.

Yeah I could go on and on about other leagues, but this is the NFL forum so I figured we were talking NFL.

For MLB, you missed Ted Williams who was the last manager of the Washington Senators and first manager of the Texas Rangers. Also, Yogi Berra, who won two pennants as manager of the Yankees and Mets.

I said he was the best player who became a head coach, not the only good player to become a head coach. Norm Van Brocklin is another one.

Also Joe Torre was a 9-time All-Star catcher, won an MVP, and is probably the best eligible catcher not in the HOF as a player.
