There's talk that Malcolm Butler is upset with his agents. He hasn't had an offer from anyone because of the trade rumor to the Saints. Teams are afraid that they'll have to pony up $15M per to keep the Patriots or Saints from matching and then have to give up a first round pick next year. At the rate and length of contracts a team would be looking 5 years $75M with somewhere around $50M guaranteed. Butler is 27 so the contract would take him to 32. Then they have to weigh whether or not Butler will be the piece that gets them into the playoffs or beyond.

Butler's between a rock and a hard place.

If he's smart, he might personally call BB, apologize for his agents, accept the tender and tell Bill he wants to stay,
work out a contract after next season and beg him not to trade him to the Saints or anywhere else. Then fire his agents.

On Sports Tonight there was a discussion about Darrell Revis. Apparently Revis is looking for anyone to give him a job. Supposedly, Revis has started working with a nutritionist (TB????) in order to lose 20 lbs. He wants to play CB not Safety and he'd like to play in Foxboro.

He admits that he's put on unnecessary weight, has lost a step because of it and hasn't worked anywhere near as hard as he did during his one year in New England.

If he lost the 20 lbs. would he be worth the risk??

Still depends on the contract. Only if he takes short base money heavy on game day and snaps played bonuses. His word that he's going to try harder next year is insufficient.

Sign him to the incentive plan. He has the mental ability, does he have the physical tools as well?
20 lbs are a lot to carry around with you (I know...) and hurt every aspect of your game.
Quickness, top speed, change of direction, jumping.

Butler, Gilmore and a fit healthy Revis...??? Could be killer.

No to Revis. Patriots are talking to Revis to put even more heat on Butler. Ideally enough heat to tie him up for 3 years at a friendly price.

Butler deserves what he can get. Apparently not too many other teams think he's worth the cost. You have to remember, he was undrafted, given an opportunity, took advantage of it, played well. The union has set the parameters and all teams except the stupid ones, take advantage.

Right now, the Patriots hold all of the cards. If no one makes him an offer, he gets a 600% raise. If some one makes him a low ball offer the Patriots can match it. If someone makes a home run offer the Pats get a 1st round pick.

If he'd been drafted, he'd still be playing under a rookie contract.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Panthers have traded defensive end Kony Ealy to the Patriots along with a third-round pick, and will get New England’s second-round pick in return.

That's only an 8 spot drop, btw...like it

Basically, they got him for free. The Panthers signed Julius Peppers and had to make room.

The Patriots have traded for Panthers defensive end Kony Ealy, CSNNE's Tom E. Curran has confirmed. The trade was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The swap is an interesting one, as the Patriots will send their second-round pick (No. 64 overall) to Carolina for Ealy and the Panthers’ third-round pick, which is No. 70 overall. That means the Patriots are barely moving down in the draft and picking up Ealy, the 60th pick in the 2014 draft, in the process.

A 6-foot-4, 275 defensive end out of Missouri, Ealy has played in all 16 games of each of the last two seasons after missing one game as a rookie in 2015. He had four sacks as a rookie and had five in both 2015 and 2016.

Ealy took the spotlight in Super Bowl 50, absolutely terrorizing Peyton Manning. He sacked Manning three times, intercepted him and forced him to fumble on a fourth-quarter strip sack.

Ahead of Super Bowl LI, Ealy picked the Patriots to beat the Falcons, saying you can't doubt Tom Brady in a big game.

What to know about Kony Ealy, reportedly acquired by New England Patriots

FILE - In this Feb. 7, 2016, file photo, Denver Broncos' Peyton Manning (18) loses the ball as he is hit by Carolina Panthers' Kony Ealy (94) during the second half of the NFL Super Bowl 50 football game, in Santa Clara, Calif. Ealy's breakout game on the biggest stage has led to huge expecations for the third-year defensive end.

BB is getting most of what he needs in free agency. Probably good since he is trading away top draft choices (unless a Garoppolo trade brings in some new ones). I see a few unfortunate aspects to all the moves. First, our #1 CB (Butler) is earning several times less than Gilmore. Something will hopefully be done next season to rectify this. Second, with the acquisition of Cooks, it is probably goodbye to Amendola. Really too bad since Dola left money on the table for 2 straight years in order to remain a Patriot. Third, I think our new tight end is making nearly what Gronk is (I may be wrong about this). Gronk has already dropped hints about his salary in recent years.
