Washington (3-2 overall, 1-1 Pac-12) renews one of its longest rivalries this Saturday night as Oregon (3-3, 1-2) comes to Husky Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. PT game. The Dawgs, who received two points in this week’s USA Today coaches’ poll, traveled to Los Angeles and beat then-No. 17 USC, 17-12, last Thursday night while the Ducks fell to Washington State, 45-38 in double overtime, last Saturday in Eugene.

The Huskies have outscored their opponents 66-7 in the third quarter this season ... the Dawgs rank No. 7 in the nation in fewest penalties with just 23 ... the UW is 9th in the nation in punt returns and No. 13 in punt return defense ... Washington leads the Pac-12 in rushing defense, scoring defense, total defense and red-zone defense ... Washington has played 10 true freshmen this season: OL Trey Adams, LB Tevis Bartlett, QB Jake Browning, LB Ben Burr-Kirven, TB Myles Gaskin, DB Austin Joyner, WR Chico McClatcher, DB Jordan Miller, WR Quinten Pounds and WR Isaiah Renfro ... Washington’s current roster includes 52 freshmen (true and redshirt) and 24 sophomores, as compared to 13 seniors ... 33 Huskies made their home debut in the UW’s win over Sacramento State ... Browning was the first true freshman ever to start a season opener at quarterback for Washington ... he was the first true freshman QB to start in any game since Marques Tuiasosopo vs. Oregon in 1997, which was until this year, the only true freshman QB start in modern UW history ... Browning’s 368 passing yards vs. Utah State were most ever by a UW freshman (true or redshirt) ... Gaskin rushed for 146 yards vs. Sacramento State, third-most yards ever by a UW true freshman (Joe Steele, 157 vs. Oregon, 1976; Willie Hurst, 155 vs. UCLA, 1998) ... Husky Dante Pettis returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdown at Boise State, his second career punt return for a TD (he went 87 yards Nov. 1, 2014, at Colorado) ... he’s the first Husky to compile two punt returns for TDs since Charles Frederick in 2002 and 2003 ... in five games so far, UW special teams have blocked a punt, a PAT and a field goal, returned a punt for a touchdown and also run a fake field goal in for a TD.

Washington’s most-played rivalries are against the other three other northwest Pac-12 schools. The Huskies have faced Washington State 107 times, Oregon in 107 games and Oregon State on 99 occasions. Washington owns the advantage in all three series. The Huskies lead the Ducks 58-44-5, Washington State 69-32-6 and Oregon State 61-34-4. Combined, Washington has a 188-110-15 (.625) record against its northwest rivals.

Washington enters the week ranked atop the Pac-12 Conference in rushing defense (121.6 yard per game), scoring defense (15.0 point per game) and total defense (326.0 yards per game). The UW is also in a virtual tie for the lead in pass efficiency defense as both the Huskies and UCLA are listed at 102.6.

Is this the year? I want to say it is, but I have absolutely no confidence in our OC. I don't think he will develop Browning to his true potential.

He should have an outstanding game against the ducks weak secondary. If he doesnt it's entirely on Smith. There are plenty of freshman playing QB and playing it well against much tougher competition.

It's time to start showing your worth Smith, or get the fuck out of UW.

I like our d, future is bright but we are still facing the #10 O in the country with VA likely returning, and I'm not convinced our own offense can keep pace.

Oregon 38
Huskies 21

Prove me wrong!!!

Andrew Greif, Oregonian beat writer for the Ducks:

If Vernon Adams is indeed healthy enough to play, how do you think that changes Oregon's offense?

Greif: “A healthy Adams instantly upgrades the Ducks’ downfield passing game. In the past three games, Oregon has completed 3-of-14 passes thrown 20 yards or more downfield. In the same span, they’ve attempted 40 passes nine yards or shorter, which tells you why defenses are more comfortable keeping players in the box now with less of a threat of being beaten over the top. I think people believe Adams is a runner on par with Mariota; he’s not, and has said he’s not that comfortable running the read-option. Stretching the field vertically is his specialty, and this is the most talented group of receivers Oregon’s ever had.”

What have been the biggest issues defensively this season? Opposing coaches still rave about Oregon's front seven, and there's obviously still a lot of talent there.

Greif: “The issues start with the inexperience in the secondary. Oregon’s going to line up this week with a sophomore at corner, a redshirt freshman at the other, a sophomore safety and another safety who is also playing receiver. Their two most-experienced defensive backs (safety Reggie Daniels and corner Chris Seisay) have been hurt or ineffective. Offenses learned early they could pick on the secondary and haven’t stopped since. The other issue is that Oregon is having trouble with the fundamentals, such as tackling in space and getting aligned properly pre-snap. Defensive coordinator Don Pellum simplified his scheme prior to a win at Colorado and had seven sacks and 13 tackles for loss last week against Washington State, but couldn’t get stops when he needed them.”

I like this since Oregon leads the Pac in Rushing Offense (318.7 yards per game) 2nd in scoring offense (41.5 points per game. .8ppg behind AZ) and 2nd in total offense (528.7 yards per game. 1.5ypg behind AZ)
i like when these kinds of matchups happen. strength on strength.

I don't see anyone stopping Royce consistently this year. If Helf has a functioning brain he will feed him the rock all day.
