Samardzija-

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Giants are "drawing a fair amount of interest" in Jeff Samardzija and Hunter Strickland.

"Shark" is making $19.8 million this season and $19.8 million each of the next three years, so the Giants might have to kick in a little money in order to deal him. He's had a nice season, though, the 4.86 ERA notwithstanding, boasting an incredible 135/14 K/BB ratio over 124 innings and a 3.52 FIP. Strickland has had control issues this season but holds a 1.91 ERA with over a strikeout per inning and is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter.

Not sure how I feel about Samardzija.

You can make the same argument for trading for him that you do with Justin Verlander, but Verlander has been much better over the past 3 years and his disgusting contract runs out a year before Samardzija's.

Samardzija 2015-2017: 4.51 ERA 541.1 IP 465 Ks 1.230 WHIP
Verlander 2015-2017: 3.52 ERA 471 IP 470 Ks 1.142 WHIP

Although there is a fair argument to be made that Samardzija's season this year isn't as bad as his ERA would indicate.

Either way, I wouldn't want to give up much of anything for either. Just offer a C grade prospect or two and offer to eat most of the contract.

Trevor Cahill is having a nice year for himself. 3.14 ERA in 10 starts with a 11.1 SO/9 rate.

And is a FA after this year so shouldn't cost much at all.

But JD said he wants long term and not rentals. Cahill is fine for me if cheap.

Yea, I get that but unless they are willing to part with some pieces to get a Stroman, Gray or Cole I think they should look at guys like Cahill. Wouldn't be a difference maker but a big upgrade over Gaviglio. A long term guy would probably cost you Gamel or Haniger plus Moore or Neidart and probably another piece. Not saying I'm against that but I doubt JD does that

I agree but also think if they can get a #2 who is under control for say 2 to 3 more years after this one, it may be worth the price...depending on the price of course. A guy like Stroman or Archer would be worth it for me.

Oh yea. I would definately part with Gamel/Haniger and Neidart/Moore for one of those two.

Another name I thought of is Tyler Glasnow of the Pirates. He wouldn't be the veteran we need, but could be a long term player. He struggled in the majors this year but since being sent down he has a 1.49 ERA with 55 K's in 36.1 Inn. in AAA.

David Phelps, currently of the Marlins and broke in with the Fraudkees. Not the sexiest name out there but the interesting thing about this guy is that he has started 64 games in the majors. So, technically, if they wanted, they could send him to AA or AAA, get him stretched out, and then bring up to the Mariners as a starter. His track record as a starter is not that bad. It's better than Gaviglio and Bergman anyway. And one of those guys would probably one of the players going back in the trade. I can't image the Mariners would give up any of our young major league talent (Gamel, Motter, Heredia, Haniger) for him.

Three prospects and a Centerfielder. So, centerfielder could mean Heredia or Powell or Martin. I hope it isn't Heredia. And I'm glad that appears Motter is remaining with the club. I was never worried about Gamel or Haniger. Those two guys' values are much higher than they were four months ago.

The centerfielder is Brayan Hernandez.

Mariners give up Brayan Hernandez, Brandon Miller, Pablo Lopez and Lukas Schiraldi for Phelps.

Wonder if they plan on moving him back to the rotation. His track record as a starter is pretty solid.

Phelps has a career 4.21 ERA in 64 career starts. I could see them keeping him in the bullpen or moving him to the rotation. Kind of interested to see if they traded for him with the desire to move him to the rotation.

FOX’s Ken Rosenthal also hears the two sides are talking but says there’s no match to this point, as the Marlins don’t love the Mariners’ minor league system

  • The Mariners “appear willing” to trade outfield prospect Tyler O’Neill this summer, reports Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune. The 22-year-old O’Neill entered the season ranked among the game’s 50 or so best prospects on several notable lists (Baseball America, MLB.com, Baseball Prospectus) but got off to a poor start to the season in Triple-A. He’s recovered with a 1.127 OPS over his past 26 games to bring his batting line back up to a respectable .241/.326/.462, but Dutton notes that the emergence of Mitch Haniger and Ben Gamel has the M’s more open to a deal. Despite the presence of that duo, however, Seattle hasn’t shown an inclination to deal top organizational prospect Kyle Lewis.
Not sure how I feel about this...

I understand that the one position that the Mariners have organizational depth at is OF, but I'd really hate to see O'Neill go unless it was for a controllable, younger #2 or better.

To continue my long string of posts:

Trade talks between the Astros and Athletics pertaining to Sonny Gray are “heating up,” according to MLB.com’s Jon Morosi (Twitter links). Morosi adds that while Houston is in talks with the A’s, the Astros are also maintaining interest in trying to work out a deal that would net both Justin Verlander and Justin Wilson from the Tigers.

Yikes.
