LOL, at this rate they're going to need guys to take triple digits. Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Bernie Williams all getting their numbers retired. Nice players on really good teams yes, but doesn't this sound odd?

Ruth, Mantle, Gehrig and Bernie Williams????

Williams is the really odd one here. I get Pettitte, and I can I see the argument for Posada. But Bernie Williams? Really?

None of those three deserve it.

Never agreed with the concept of retiring #'s. Great to honour them but no need to retire them.

I was unaware of this, but apparently the Cowboys do not retire anyone's number. They add them to the "Ring of Honor" (or whatever it is called), but the numbers are just numbers. I like this.

I am actually not a huge fan of how the Giants do it. They have a team policy that in order to get your number retired, you must be in the HOF. Then they have a "Wall of Fame" that is equation based, and not honor based. The requirement is spending 5 years with the big club with an All-Star appearance, or 9 years with the team.

Will Clark has the same "honor" as Marvin Benard. That is a travesty.

Bernie wasn't far off from a HOF career, so I don't know what why that's the odd one here...

.297/.381/.477, 125 OPS+, 287 HR, 1257 RBI, 2336 hits, 1366 runs, 49 career WAR.

I'd say he was a better player than Pettitte was a pitcher.

If nothing else he sure as hell deserved a better damn exit from the Yankees that what he got.

Also:

Career perspective
As of 2013, he holds the career postseason record for runs batted in (80). He is also second all-time for postseason home runs (22), doubles (29), total hits (128), total bases (223), and runs scored (83), and third in post-season games played (121).

No one was more clutch in the playoffs than Bernie and he spent his entire career with the team. To me retiring his number makes as much or more sense than any of that group except Mariano and Jeter. That being said, I don't think any of them should be retired. On the anniversaries of the titles they should celebrate those teams on Old Timers Day and leave it at that.

Bernie Williams is one of the greatest YANKEES... Might not be one of the greatest players... But he spent his whole career with the Yankees and compiled numbers to be on all the Yankee offensive lists...

15th in BA
6th in runs
7th in HRs
7th in RBIs

Yea, and he hit a respectable .275 with an .850 OPS in the playoffs, so it's not merely as if he were compiling numbers while stinking up the joint.

That came out wrong. IMO only Jeter and Mariano are the only 2 from that group who should have their numbers retired

Agreed. Those two, you don't even have to argue about it. Even hardcore yankee haters will grudgingly concur.

Bernie, again, was a pretty good player and one of my favorites even though he played across town. But when you have to debate whether or not a player should be in the Hall/have their jersey retired, then they probably shouldn't get in.

Rick Cerone is having his measurements taken for a monument.
