My solution:

4 20 team super conferences (2 divisions of 10 teams each).
Schedule consists of 9 games from your division plus 3 games from the other 3 conferences.

No more pastries for you!

To be in the 8 team tournament, you have to win your division.
Square off in seeded fashion against the other 7 division winners (1 plays 8, 2 plays 7, etc).
The four traditional major bowls host the 4 games.
Highest bidders get the semi-finals and finals.

They will be weighing the cash instead of counting it.

Every year, teams who aren't competitive can be relegated and other teams promoted.

Problem solved.

yeah, except that you would frequently be excluding top 5 teams from an 8 team playoff in favor of teams well outside the top 10.

Yep, and they don't even do that in lower divisions. While D2 has a 24-team playoff, conference champions often get left out in the cold, because everything is based on "Super Region" rankings, along with earned access.

MSU's goal is playing in Pasadena...Rose at the least...the NCG at longshot best

um, i understand d'antonio taking up for his program but he is flat out wrong if he thinks michigan state deserves a shot at the title over a 1 loss auburn team (assuming they beat missouri). auburn lost 1 game to a ranked opponent and would have 4 wins over ranked opponents (2 in the top 10). michigan state would have 1 win over a ranked opponent (top 10) and a loss to an unranked opponent.

even in a down big 10, michigan state had a particularly easy conference schedule by not playing wisconsin or ohio state.

um, you obviously understand nothing about coach DANTONIO...if you did you'd know that he thinks Sparty deserves to be, at least, a part of the title game 'conversation' if MSU beats OSU (who is a virtual lock for the NC if they win.) He'd also be the first to congratulate Auburn for a remarkable season - including back-to-back once-in-a-lifetime miracle wins to finish their schedule - if they manage to play for the NC.

okay here is the conversation that would be had should auburn amd michigan state both win:

1 win over a ranked team (top 10) compared to 4 wins over ranked teams (including a top 5 win). big time edge to auburn.

both teams would have 1 loss... 1 to a top 15 LSU team, the other to an unranked notre dame team. again, edge to auburn.

that's just how voters would look at it. the computers would also look at it... and guess what? they would favor auburn over michigan state significantly as well.

so yeah, they could be in the conversation, but it would be a very short and one-sided conversation.

this is not to say michigan state is not a quality football team. we actually don't know anything about them really since they haven't yet played a ranked team. but there is no scenario i can see where after this last week of football games that michigan state could have one of the two best resumes in the country. there are many scenarios where you could argue auburn has one of the two best resumes in the country.

I want an 8 team playoff. Conference champs and 3 wild cards. No automatic for the AAC, but maybe an AAC champ gets Notre Dame type provisions. Wild cards otherwise selected by finish.

And less human element, more emphasis on SOS. Playing good teams is basically a bad thing now. The spoils go to the team that does the best schedule dodging.

That would be solved by making everyone play round robin in their division (so none of this crap where you get to miss the best teams in your "conference" like happens with the B1G and SEC plus requiring that the ooc games be vs. teams in the other conferences instead of GaSO and FAMU.

that's lovely and all, but the playoff would still not be the 8 best teams which is what most people would want.

Why have 4 bifurcated conferences? Why not just 8 smaller conferences with this scheme you've drawn up?

Both MSU and Ohio State spent the year playing cup cakes; now they play each other. Not sure if this proves either one is a top flight team.

We has Bama done this season to deserve making the title game or playoff? Beat a 4 loss A&M? Down year LSU? If MSU were to beat Ohio State thatd be a much better win than Bama has.

So Saban begging and pleading for his team, with an inferior schedule to Oklahoma State, to make it into the title game was him doing everything that he can for his team and should be commended.

Auburn AD spouting off about it is a disservice to the country for a 1-loss SEC to not play in the national title game and should jump an undefeated Big10, is perfectly acceptable.

Dantonio says that he thinks they deserve to be in the discussion, just the discussion, he should just shut the fuck up and take it. Got it.

I don't remember Saban begging and pleading. I remember him asking the voters to vote for who they thought were the two best teams. Kind of like when a defense lawyer asks a jury to focus on did the defendant commit this actual crime, and not to convict just because you don't like him as a human being for some other valid reasons.

The Auburn AD took it too far. He stuck up for his program like others do and I don't necessarily disagree with his eventual point... but the Unamerican line came off pretty dumb.

Dantonio is free to say he thinks they belong in the discussion, and as I've pretty obviously outlined, the discussion should be quite brief if Michigan State and Auburn both win.

Alabama would still have twice as many wins over ranked teams as Michigan State and their loss would have been a close one to a top 10 team as opposed to a close one against an unranked team.

If Michigan State wins and the series of events makes it a Michigan State vs. Alabama debate, then you can have that debate. I think Alabama still wins that debate. There is a reason Alabama is so far ahead of Michigan State in the computers and they will likely be ahead of them even after a MSU win over tOSU... but if it is a Michigan State vs. Auburn debate, there is no real debate.

Michigan State's 4 point loss to Notre Dame, in South Bend, is a better loss than the Auburn 14 point loss to Louisiana State, in Baton Rouge --- if you guys want to go that route. There really isn't a big difference between 2013 ND and 2013 LSU. Turn the computers off and watch the MSU-ND game. Michigan State has a pretty good team....especially if defense means anything.

Not much difference between LSU and Notre Dame? Are you saying is that if those 2 teams were to play on a neutral field and Vegas set the line as a pick 'em that about even amounts of money would go on both sides. If you believe it, then okay.

And sorry, but even if you think the loss in South Bend was the same as the loss in Baton Rouge, it hardly makes up for the fact that Michigan State has yet to play a ranked team this season and Auburn has played 4.

Defense means a lot. And it'd mean even more if we got to see Michigan State's defense take on a ranked team more than once a season in a conference title game.
