Report: Detroit Lions' front office wanted to fire coach Jim Schwartz last season | MLive.com

"Then, there's the fact that Schwartz was nearly fired last year," Werder said. "Really, the only reason he wasn't was Bill Ford Jr. felt that the buyout number in his contract was far too high.

Oh. Wonder what the buyout number is this year?

Yo, Hammer. Who do you think was the brains in Tennessee? Fisher or Schwartz? Just curious.

Living in Tennessee, I don't hate these guys, but I think Fisher is the better coach.

The fact that I am speechless to try and comment on this says all that need be.

In a related note, Kreton has been promoted to the role of BSL. Make sure to congratulate him on that stupendous honor.

"But there are people, internally, who question how undisciplined this team is and they really have an aversion to Schwartz's personality……and tight pants."

"After all, Forbes estimated the Lions as the only team to lose money last season, the fourth consecutive year the publication has had the team in the red."----That's unreal. With all the support this team still has, it's hard to fathom them losing money 4 consecutive years. I can't comment with certainty, but how many people would retain regular jobs if they lost money 4 consecutive years? Just wondering.

"A voicemail left for Werder seeking additional context to his comments was not returned."---Hmmmmmm….

That should tell you all you need to know about how committed the Fords are to winning. I personally will not buy another game ticket while that family owns the team.

The coach has very little role in the profitability of the franchise in most cases.

Schwartz has shown he's not capable of being a head coach though IMO.

Its not just you. Most everyone has that opinion. I have been saying it for over 2 years now.

I know. A guy who did not play another year in the NFL looked like a superstar against that defense. Granted improvements were made this year, but it is still a flawed scheme.

Detroit needs to can Schwartz this year no matter what. Signing him to that contract in the first place was a huge mistake. They have a lot of talent on that team that is going to waste at the hands of clown coaching, and they need to get that situated before their window closes. They should have easily won the division this season with Rodgers and Cutler both being hurt for so long, and the Vikings being flat out terrible.

I told the Lions to stick my 24 years of season tickets up their ass in 1997 and have never regretted it.

This right here makes me wonder why I would spend $$$ to see the home opener next season?? Ford feels the money is much to high to buyout the assclown that he approved to extend the contract of.

However, I would still come just to bless some of you with my presence.

I know we're all angry, by firing a guy one year from a playoff birth that has just signed an extension doesn't make sense.

You can't settle. That is what Lions organization does. Lovie got fired after 10 win season missing playoffs. Once the Bears get some defense, Trestman will have them atop this division. (with or without Cuntler) WHY?? Bears ownership does not settle.

Doesn't make sense if you are a bottom dollar guy. Does make very good sense if you want a winning product.

Employment decisions, especially at that level within an organization, are fluid in that the previous reasons need to be set aside when new evidence is brought to light. The current MO for this orgnaization is that it can't finish when it needs to, as evidenced by the recent streak of games and to a larger extent, how this season started strong and ended weak. It's almost as if this team needs a new sponsor, like Cialis for daily use. Except change the tag line from "When the moment is right" to include "you'll make it to the finish" or something along those lines.

In economic terms, the previous decisions are sunk costs. There is nothing to be done about them, except avoiding mounting loses by continuing to make bad decisions based on having incurred those sunk costs. Cut your loses, move on, learn from the mistake, and work towards profitability by putting out better product. In this case, to get a better product a key step is bringing in better coaching.

I live in an area where the Vikings are the home team. Local sports talk radio is wondering which head coach will be dismissed first after this upcoming game. With Schwartz's behavior in leading the Lions, they're wondering why he wasn't dismissed already.

I'm just glad I didn't buy tickets to the season ender here a month or so ago when it looked like the Lions were going to dominate the North. MOA field, or the Metrodome, call it what you want, is a pit to watch a game in, and to watch a meaningless game isn't worth more than $10 a ticket.
