Of all of the idiotic arguments that show up on these boards, the argument over what NC's a school claims is easily the most idiotic!!

I love all of this revisionist history bullshit where fans of one team try to tell fans of another which of their titles are or are not legit in an attempt to make themselves feel better about their team!!

Bottom line is this: if your team won an NC by a recognized organization under the rules that governed the sport at the time, it's legit!!

Example: USC has been awarded 17 National Championships, but only claims 11!! Why? Because the other 6 were awarded by organizations that were not generally recognized as part of the process!! Seems pretty simple!!

His list only shows you guys having won 4 total, totally inaccurate. And Miami was pretty much a doormat in the '50s, '60s and '70s.... so they did not even sniff a National Title before Schnellenberger.

You are correct! Miami should have 5 and certainly none in the 60's. I knew that before even writing. somehow went on paper incorrectly.

I FIND IT FUNNY THAT SO MANY ARE STARTING TO ASK WHAT ABOUT THE COACHES POLL OR THE AP POLL AFTER 1998. I only brought up the Coaches' Poll pre-BCS because I consider it and the AP to be the two legit sources of the modern era. JMO

True, but here's an example of what I'm talking about: In 1978 USC played Alabama at Alabama and beat them 24-14!! Both teams finished their seasons with one loss!!

The NC ended up being split between USC (UPI/Coaches) and Alabama (AP), Alabama claims 1978 as one of their NC seasons. They were voted NC by one of the recognized organizations at the time and I am not about to try to tell them that they shouldn't or that it isn't legit!!

The AP was also part of the original BCS formula. After the debacles that happened in 2003 when USC should was ranked #1 in both polls and didn't get in and 2004 when an unbeaten Auburn was left out of the NCG, the AP removed themselves from the equation (which was likely the beginning of the end of the BCS).

The AP was a recognized organization for awarding NC's. It is today and it will be once the BCS is finally done and over with!! You can claim that there are no split titles after 1998, but the fact is that there are!!

USC did lose to 9-3 Arizona St 20-7. USC beat Alabama early in the season. totally different teams by the end including two wins by USC helped by the refs and in the record books. I have no problem with both claiming them but don't dog Bama for it either.

Did you actually read my post? I specifically said that I have no prob. with Alabama claiming the title and would not try to claim that it wasn't legit. It was awarded by a recognized organization, so I wouldn't and haven't dogged Alabama for claiming it!!
