Saw on another site, and checked it out myself, Dana is now following Tom Bradely on twitter, as well as Zac Spavital (DB coach at Houston) - for what it is worth

No, he was a 4-3 guy...which isn't to say that he doesn't know how to run a 3-4. A football coach is a football coach, and the guy definitely knows his stuff.

So what do you guys think? Gutsy move by DH, but maybe he sees something in Gibson that he likes....the addition of Tall get a solid recruiter in Ohio and he coached some good defensive backs while at WVU.

My gut tells me this is not going to end well.

I understand the predicament. How can you hire a DC and retain the current position coaches? Most DC's will want to select their own staff. So, you promote from within.

Gibby has little experience in being a DC. We have seen how this can work out at times. Joe DeForest, Jeff Mullen come to mind…

Just screams bush league move and still doesn't take defense seriously enough. I have a bad feeling that a really solid DC wont touch working with Dana after some of the brain dead calls he made during games that put the defense in bad position.

A glass half full take might be that maybe with the RS frosh that will be ready to start seeing the field on D this year along with the returning players, this defense gets much better regardless of who the DC is and if it DOES turn out to be a solid unit then we have Gibby as the face of the new defense and his recruiting touch to go with it moving forward, momentum could be very good..

But Ill be the first to admit, that's a lot of sunshine pumping on my part :loco2:

I tell you what if the hire is booster-admin influenced then DH deserves the next two years here regardless...just my opinion. If the man is going to succeed/fail let him do it his own way. There should only be one HC of the program.

Bradley would be my first choice. If he is not the man, I hope Mitchel gets the nod. Mitchel done a good job at ECU, he had one bad year with ECU and they canned him.

Expect #WVU safeties coach Tony Gibson to be candidate to replace Keith Patterson as DC. Keeps cohesion, and he's well-regarded there

Not to minimize the importance of a DC..but if he doesn't plan to totally junk what they did last year then Gibson is going to be fine...there seems to be alot of strong coaches around him and adding Tall just re-enforces it...

At the end of the day you run maybe 6 or 7 different looks and its all about how as a coach you choose to apply pressure on down and distance...IMHO an OC's job is much harder...

Personally, if you put a gun to my head and told me I had to choose to call plays on offense or defense, I would choose offense every single time. On offense you can dictate the pace and put your players in position to exploit defenders. On defense you generally have to RE-act...unless you're a gambler...which is high risk/high reward, and will catch up with you eventually. IMHO calling defenses is pretty friggin challenging (unless you're in the SEC and have a roster full of Blue Chips to make up for schematic/ alignment mistakes).

There are so many things that concern me with Gibby getting the nod - too many to run through. Unless Holgorsen changes his offensive philosophy to play ball-control/keep-away so the defense stays off the field (which I don't see happening), I think we're going to be in for a defensive performance reminiscent of the DeForrest season. It may get pretty ugly, fellas.

Well..no guns today!...I guess I missed my point somehow....on offense the playbook is much more extensive than on the defensive side of the ball...In game managment on defense is just an educated guessing game ....

I think regardless of who is the DC a lot of people are looking at this to be DH's last season here so I am all aboard whoever it is.....if it turns out to be a admin/booster hire then I think he automatically gets two more years.

Gibbs will be coming ingot this situation with more exp than eforrest so there is that small glimmer of hope. What I mean is at least he was part of the defensive process where eforrest was more of a specialist coach with the ST.

We do not need a DC legend IMO...in the Big 12 the best a team has finished in scoring defense is 21st (22ppg) the last three years (Ok St). We do not play in a defensive conference. Lookmat Baylor last year they were a top ten defense until they started playing in the Conf.We need a guy who can make solid situational calls, a lot of our games hove come down to a few plays determining wins and L's. Let Gibby have his turn, last thing we want is blurred lines when determining the future of DH as head coach.

No announcement yet? My take is that Luck is trying to lure someone here with some real credentials to be the DC. I see a plan being to bring in someone who can be told that the job will be yours unless Dana can get the offense going. I have no idea of who it may be, but a search is most likely on.

It may not be fair to Dana for Luck to put these coaches on him, but given how we have done the last two years, Dana is lucky to have a job right now. This staff has Lucks name all over it.
