no, he's not unfireable...but it'd take some Sandusky type shit, not a couple of first round tourney losses to get him run out of town

Not seeing Coach K throwing shit across the hardwood, or choking anyone out, swearing up a storm any time, any place, any time s.......ever. Knight gets offended "disrespected" very easily. One of the best coaches ever but that's for a different thread. ..

Coach K's temper/level arrogance is nowhere near that of Bobby Knight's.

It's clear that Duke is missing a big inside stopper on defense. Unless Plumlee is injured, that kid should have been developed so he would be ready for teams like Mercer. Their center tore up Parker and company...just too much height and ass for those guys.

Plumlee isn't good at basketball. Being tall doesn't mean you should play, and that's why he doesn't touch the floor. He would get torched by any good offensive big man

Nobody is unfireable.

But the chances of that happening are microscopic. It would take a huge scandal being put on his shoulders, or an extreme downturn in results over a long period of time for them to fire him.

Well, not really, since he was calling for a change immediately. But either way, Duke won't collapse. Other than a supreme talent (Jabari), this team didn't have a lot of natural talent. Their #2 player was debatably the third best player on Mississippi State. He lost a ton of talent from a team that made an Elite Eight and lost to the eventual champs, and they still finished #2 the ACC.

He's got a loaded class coming in next year. He's clearly a top five head coach (I'd put him at #2 behind Self). A "down" year is 28 wins. He's the winningest coach ever by games, and he has 5 titles and 11 Final Fours. And he's done it with no implications of severe NCAA violations. He took over a subpar program which is now the best program in America.

In other words, he is literally the most unfireable coach in history. Again, this thread is disgustingly ESPN.

This. No one is 'unfireable,' but if there ever was such a man, it's K.

Good post. Except Coach K has only 4 Titles. Coach K IS Duke basketball.

• Four National Championships (1991, 1992, 2001, 2010)
• Four gold medals as head coach of USA Men's National Team
• 957 career wins (most in NCAA history)
• 884 victories at Duke, including 402 ACC wins
• 82 NCAA Tournament victories (first all-time)
• 12 National Coach of the Year honors (eight seasons)
• Seven National Players of the Year (nine honors)
• Six National Defensive Players of the Year (nine honors)
• 29 NCAA Tournament bids
• 27 All-America selections (41 honors)
• 11 Final Four appearances (T-2nd all-time)
• 12 ACC regular season championships
• 13 ACC Tournament championships
• 506 weeks ranked among the nation's top 25 teams
• 445 weeks ranked among the nation's top 10 teams
• 109 weeks ranked No. 1 in the country
• 45 NBA Draft selections, including 25 in the first round
• 17 NBA Lottery picks
• 10 Consecutive Top 10 AP Poll finishes (1997-2006)

Yep, they need to fire him. SMH

Everyone can be let go at some point, even legends. The interesting thing about this conversation is that Assistant coach Capel is given tremendous amounts of credit for being the lead in helping land Hood, Parker, Okafor, Jones and Winslow, somewhere down the line is a change possible, yes but we're talking years, is a change needed now, no. A few years back many Duke supporters complained about not having those athletic stars on teams such as the Duke team (and tournament favorite that year) led by Shelden Williams and JJ Reddick that lost to LSU and Big Baby and Tyrus Thomas. Now K is getting those kids (Austin Rivers, Kyrie Irving, Jabari Parker) and they are not staying, the roster turnover is becoming nuts as kids cannot fully comprehend his NBA ready system in one year tourney time. K has a intricate system, he's going to have to find a balance of finding more Nolan Smith's, John Scheyers, and Kyle Singlers to support the transitions and learning curves while cushioning the departures of the Rivers, Irving's and maybe Parkers. When Kyrie Irving joined Duke he was a one and done on a championship team with Senior Leadership. When Jabari Joined the team he was a Freshman leading a Sophomore dominated team with no winning experience. The blind cannot lead the blind.

Should he be fired? He's one of the greatest coaches in NCAA history. Duke will be fine.

Yes. Unless he pulls a Woody Hayes or is convicted of a felony, it's his for as long as he wants it... and it should be as much as I detest him and the dukies.

2nd time in 3 years his team has had a colossal meltdown in the first round of the tournament.

They also made the Elite 8 last year before losing to eventual National Champion, Louisville. :noidea:

and Coach K is never getting fired by Duke. They named the court after him.

In a imaginery world perhaps, in the real world under no terms. He will become a bronze statue, but never fired. The insinuation is beyond laughable. Duke might have a real great player in Parker and a good player in Hood but this year he didn't have some super talented team. No center. No great point guard. Who we kidding here?

Is he unfireable forever? No. But he has more than enough history and success with the program for him to ride out basically anything short of Sandusky II, and his team is still pretty freaking good. You don't fire a coach for getting your team a three seed and losing in the first round.

It was great to see them lose. what a game by Mercer. Who the hell is Mercer. This might go down as one of the worst L's for Coach K.
