Mets 5th round selection Jared King

67. Jared King, of Kansas State

His older brother Jason was a Tigers fourth-round pick two years ago, and Jared should go a round or two earlier this June. King is the biggest threat in a deep Kansas State lineup that has powered an unexpected run at the Big 12 Conference regular-season title. A 6-foot-1, 200-pound switch-hitter, he has a smoother stroke from the left side but has looked better than ever from the right side this spring. He has strength and bat speed, with estimates of his future power ranging from 15-20 homers on an annual basis. He doesn’t always show that pop consistently during games, focusing instead on working counts and making hard contact. Though his offense is his calling card, King has all-around tools. More athletic than most 6-foot, 210-pounders, he has solid speed and a chance to play center field if he improves his routes. He has bounced back from an elbow strain in the Cape Cod League last summer and shows a fringe-average arm. King plays as hard as he hits, further endearing him to scouts.

The 2 pitcher don't sound all that promising, but I like the bats. Sandy must have all of his scouts at the HS level because that seems to be where all of our high picks have been going since he took over.

Rumors circulating that the Mets might trade for Andre Ethier. I have faith that Sandy Alderson knows better than to deal for a soft ballplayer with no wheels and an 85 million dollar contract. :hellno:

I want no part of this guy. Speaking of transactions:

•Mets GM Sandy Alderson believes that the club will have a $90-100MM payroll in 2014, writes Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Alderson estimates that they have roughly $55MM in commitments for next season, which should give them flexibility over the winter.

Looks like the Mets bullpen is trying to blow another lead. Harvey goes 7 innings, 1 hit, 13Ks, 4 run lead and the pen is trying to get him a no decision. Already 2 runs given up in the 8th.

It was 50 years ago today that the first Mayor's Trophy Game between the Yankees and Mets is played in the Bronx. A crowd of 50,742, made up of mostly National League fans, sees Casey Stengel's expansion team defeat the reigning World Champions, 6-2.

He's got a ton of speed which this team lacks, is great on the bases and is an upgrade defensively over what we have. If nothing else he makes for a solid bench player/late inning replacement.

He is getting the opportunity to prove himself so I hope he makes the best of it.

Really would like Marcum to get the monkey off his back and get a win.

Didn't matter much last night, but he has I believe the 2nd lowest run support in the majors.

It gets frustrating as fans. I couldn't imagine how it is for a pitcher.

It appears that Ike is actually starting to come around a bit in Las Vegas. Honestly, I think the best thing for him would be to stay in triple A the rest of this season and come to spring training next year with a fresh outlook. I'm rootin' for the guy.

100%. The guy hit 30+ HRs last year. That's not an accident. It's clear either his swing needs some tweaking or he just needs to regain his confidence.

Random outside the box thought that would never happen, obviously I see us opting out of Johan's contract at the end of the year. Would it be possible for Johan to go the John Smoltz route and have a revival as a closer? It won't happen because he'd make significantly less as a closer than a starter but I think career wise it could be a great move for him.

In order for Johan to be effective he needs to get velocity on his fastball so that his changeup completely baffles batters. The guy cannot stay healthy long term, his shoulder/elbow whatever else will continue to give him problems. In order to try and preserve his arm and allow him to get velocity, why not shorten his workload? Have him close out games instead of pitching 5 innings every 5th day? Just a random thought.

Interesting thought, and if it happens, I hope it works out for him. Doubtful it'll be for the Mets, though.

Big win in the makeup game against Colorado. None of our big time pitchers going and Wright out of the lineup, still able to eek out a win. This team is getting fun to watch.
