Haha! Had nothing to do with it. Even at 14-3 Gannon was a popular whipping boy on talk radio and on Eagles Twitter. He was polarizing. People would go to either extreme and the middle was true. He did a lot of good things but when they played the best QBs his stuff was out matched and he didn’t have change ups off of his base stuff.

The Eagles fan base romanticizes pressure defense. The history of successful defense came with Buddy’s 46 defense and then with Jim Johnson’s pressure oriented defenses. Gannon’s bend don’t break is the new way of the NFL with offenses getting the better aspect of the game’s whistle now. Spread stuff and the quality of pass games have the edge right now and bend don’t break gives you a chance to limit explosives. What Gannon didn’t have was a way of changing it up and getting his group off the field.

OK, interesting to know he was previously under fire somewhat. Makes for a strange hire as head coach then...

It’s the Cardinals and everybody else said no because they don’t want to be linked to the success or failure of Kyler Murray.

Philly has a lot of ammunition to add to that defense.

Gannon was controversial even though his defense was top 5 in most statistical categories because he coached a very passive, read and react style of defense, and Philly fans used to Buddy Ryan and Jim Johnson wanted to see more attack D and blitzes.

The Super Bowl was arguably the game where the passive defense finally got exposed but the bomb was ticking all season. It took an elite coach and QB in Reid and Mahomes to exploit it. We will never know but Philly fans are left wondering if a more aggressive coordinator might have forced a turnover that would have made a difference in the game. Mahomes scored anyway, goes the argument, so you should have at least tried to pressure him more.
