From what some are saying out there, the dead cap will be spread over the next two years. 50 next year and 35 the year after. Massive hit for sure and by far the highest ever but they had to move on from Russ so they had to rip the bandaid off despite the pain. Unless they get lucky and find a kid in the draft that can learn and implement Payton's system, they are back into that revolving QB mold they were in before the Russ debacle. There really should be no debate now that this was the worst trade ever.

Stidham signed a 2 year $10 million deal this year so he’s gonna be on the team in 2024 but I think you’re right and they bring in someone to sit for a bit.
You get to watch him in the offense. He could stick next year as the starter. Wash off the russel years and then go get a QB the following.

The trade was fine, it was giving him the extension before he ever played a snap that killed everything.

Also the Watson one is still worse at this moment because his contract is fully guarantee, at least Denver has an out since Wilson is playing bad, Cleveland doesn’t.

Watson looked pretty good when he played this year. I think the Russ situation was the worse trade.

It wasn't just the trade that was bad... It's all the tangibles that came with it... His own office? Really?

And what @Schmoopy1000 said holds true as well. What's between the ears counts for a lot more than all that athleticism.

It does but what I'm getting at is the mindset of a QB who can move vs that of one who cannot because most sacks are ultimately
a result of QB decisions.

For a guy who can move... running and evading has always been a tool in his toolbox, so his impulse is going to be to try to do that. For a slow guy that's rarely even a thought, so when under pressure he knows he has no option but to get the ball out of there.

All of the reasons presented have some validity. This aspect is just something I started wondering about when I noticed how often some of the more mobile guys get sacked... while some much less mobile guys do not.

have you never seen highlights of him?
All he did was run around until he could find someone to throw it too or get sacked.
They didnt call him the scrambler for nothing.
I guess I haven't. I know a little about his play style but in today's NFL how many of those sacks would instead be deemed QB runs?

This is the Russell Wilson Denver never got to see, he was effin electric when he was younger, he just hadn’t aged well, doesn’t have the quickness and how he extended play’s all the time …

Crazy... Outside of D. Kreig, all other QB's have played 15+ years vs 11 years for RW... With this stat specifically, RW will easily finish #3 overall at this rate... Ironically, he will pass up another Seahawk in doing so... I think D. Thomas had 38 total sacks on Dave Kreig over his carreer! 7 in one game

I remember that game.
Should have been 8 but he got away for the game winning throw to beat the chiefs IIRC.

Yeah... Kreig was sacked a total of 9x's and they still won... Game winning pass to Paul Skanski... Largent was out and didn't play in that game...

If Russ is gone in Denver, will he ever play again?

I would be very surprised if he retired... He's not the type of person that would leave football after the way things have turned out in Denver...

I'm sure he'll be in the mode of wanting the opportunity to play for a team that has a great shot for him to lead deep into the playoffs..

I think the Falcons, Raiders would be great places for him to land...

I hope he gets a starting gig somewhere, but I wouldn't be shocked if he is done unless he is willing to take a backup job at a massive discount than what he is used to.

sounds like if someone took over his contract it is avg of 30 mil a year.
For starting QBs that is actually cheap.
So unless he has a no trade clause & this is actually true. Good chance he could get traded.
Atlanta & the Vikes both have deep threats. Russ can still sling it deep.

Fair point. If a new team is only stuck paying his salary and not the bonus then next year he would only cost the team $17M, and the following year $37M.
