Seems like VT went a little cheap on Grimes. What are the details of his retention contract?

that's 100k more than we spent on O last year, plus whatever the two retention bonuses average out to (if they end up being paid).

Assistant coach salaries for 2012 (per Bitter last March):
Bud Foster: $471,762
Bryan Stinespring: $349,980
Mike O’Cain: $252,776
Charley Wiles: $244,554
Curt Newsome: $212,653
Shane Beamer: $202,527
Cornell Brown: $202,527
Torrian Gray: $202,527
Kevin Sherman: $202,490

We actually aren't spending that much on Loeffler and Grimes because Auburn is paying the difference in salary until 2014

So Grimes pay will go from a combined 400k now (150k VT + 250k Auburn) down to 265k in July 2013. Ouch, that's a big hit. How did we land this guy? I hope he really enjoys VT, and that retention bonus is substantial, or we may not keep him long (short of a quick raise)...

if they build it, our boosters will come .. bank on it .. if they can turn this around in a few years, Frank Beamer is gonna make it rain ... FWIW -- not sure if Grimes's primary motivator is money. He's a big-time family guy, a Christian .. seems like a great fit. He turned down Mack Brown ... and I guarantee that Texas has more money than Auburn.

I just watched the press conference and I like these guys. They have very business like attitudes and seem to be chomping at the bit to get ready.

In a related note, if you watch the presser, it is worth it to wait until the very end because Antone Exum is a riot. :D

Anybody got a link to a video of the press conference?

I googled, but didn't see one. I'll check hokiesports next.

July 2013?

I'm guessing this will get opened up again once Auburn is off the hook and Loeffler and Grimes have some validation from winning at VT.

that's what the tweet above said (2013 for Grimes, 2014 for Loeffler). Could have been a typo.

Im with ya. You have to love all these guys attitudes, love how there was constant talk of getting tough, being the toughest, etc etc and you have to love Moorehead as much as Exum. I bet we are going to see some "inspired" practices this spring.

recruiting area update:

– Although Beamer said they’d talk about recruiting locations later for the new staff, Stinespring said Grimes will handle Western Pennsylvania, Stinespring and Cornell Brown will be in the 757. Loeffler will recruit quarterbacks and Grimes offensive linemen anywhere, though.

oh and you can hate stiney all you want, but me? im starting to love the guy!

– Beamer spoke highly of Stinepspring, who had said he “convinced” to stay on staff. Why’d he stay? “It’s always been the right situation for me and my family. Virginia Tech’s part of who I am. It’s inside of me,” Stinespring said. “It’s something I care a great deal about. I think when you go back and look at it and say, ‘OK, in the decision process, is the essential figure yourself.’ Then I think sometimes I situation like this might be a little difficult. But if the central figure is Virginia Tech and these kids that you love and have loved for over 20 years, and this university and this program, then it’s not so difficult. He and I talked a couple different times. He knows how I feel about this place and this university. There’s a dream we’re chasing. And I’ve been fortunate and blessed to have a front row seat to a great football story. I’m excited about the next chapter of it.”

The press conference is worth a watch. I think the coaches and players will bond fairly quickly, and these seem like some demanding coaches. They're here to win.

I think they will.

Moorehead's answer at the end was great. Injecting a bit of freshness into the team will have some positive result.
