Based on comments like " They were a great live band" and " you had to see them live " basically substantiates my thoughts that their music is mostly boring. So basically they were KISS before KISS?

Disagree.

With some notable exceptions, I typically prefer their studio albums to listening to live shows. They're typically much tighter on the albums, which I appreciate.

The shows for me were more of an experience.

The Dead were very much like liver, you either liked them or you did not but every once in a while your mom would force it down your gullet.

Interesting parallel you've drawn given the number of livers that have been abused while enjoying The Grateful Dead's music.

While KISS had their uses, to compare them to the GD is to compare a Saturday morning cartoon to an Oscar winning movie.

By seeing them live, I mean more than just cranking up the volume and adding visual histrionics that have nothing to do with the actual music.

So true.

I guess it may help to be drunk, stoned and trippin

Saw em' twice with Jerry.

My favorite part of Dead shows,(beside the copious amount of drugs) was to sit in the parking lot, and play "Would you hire that guy?" as people walked by.

Jerry had the perfect voice, spirit and stage presence to do the songs written by Robert Hunter...and the same goes for Bobby with John Barlow's tunes.

( ~);-}

Absolutely agreed.
I was just trying to take a step back and be as objective as possible in terms of the technical strength of their voices.

You have to see them live, if only on YouTube.

Everyone has their favorites, but for me, this is the best live YouTube of the Garcia Dead. If nothing else, skip to about the 55 minute mark and listen to Deal, and do it through some decent quality headphones:

Aw, man, I was at Alpine that year.
I saw enough shows, a lot of them blend together, but that Alpine run definitely stands out.

btw, @NEhomer - You and I may disagree on Mayer, but I'm glad you started this thread.
It's fun to debate various aspects of the band with a variety of people, and it's also great to read a bunch of old dead heads talkin' about songs and shows, so thanks!

John Mayer's trio stuff is pretty good and he's a solid blues player. I'm not a fan of his pop stuff and haven't heard him play Dead material (and was never really a Dead fan).

If you want modern blues and aren't listening to Bonomossa you're missing the boat.

It's my understanding that Hunter was the lyricist. I think Jerry and the band wrote most of the songs.

True..he and Barlow wrote a lot of their lyrics....and yes, it was a collaborative group effort regarding most of their song catalogue.

I made that post last night mainly to give Jerry & Bobby props for their vocals on those tunes.
Those songs were pretty much tailor made for them...and they sure did it well.

I hear too much stuff "borrowed" from Eric Johnson in Bonamassa's playing; I'd rather just listen to Eric. Not a big fan of Joe's voice either. Don't get me wrong; he's talented, just not my taste.

I did like the last Marcus King Band album, waiting to hear more from him.

Joe's band has nothing on Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino (the rest of Mayer's trio) either IMO.
