The Boston Red Sox are finalizing a deal with free-agent infielder Hanley Ramirez expected to be in the range of five years and $90 million, FoxSports.com reported on Sunday.

Ramirez was set to travel to Boston on Monday to finalize terms of the deal, according to the report.

Boston sports radio station WEEI earlier reported a deal between the two sides could come together quickly, with the talks coming on the heels of Boston's reported offer last week to free-agent third baseman Pablo Sandoval.

It was unclear whether the club was planning to acquire Ramirez as a third base consolation prize, should the Sandoval deal fall through, or in addition to a deal with the San Francisco Giants' World Series star.

Ramirez has become more of a defensive liability at shortstop, and he has reportedly informed his potential free-agent suitors he is willing to move from shortstop and play elsewhere on the diamond.

Previous reports had suggested the Seattle Mariners, among other clubs, have also expressed interest in Ramirez, 30, who batted .283 with 13 home runs and 71 RBIs the past season.

Hanley when healthy still a very good player and can have a couple more big years in him. Dodgers have the kid coming up next year so no more room for him. good pick up for Boston.

Very unusual if true.

Ramirez will likely shift to LF - which will force the Red Sox to make multiple trades with their abundance of ML OFers.

RH Ramirez @ $18m
RH Victorino @ $13m
RH Castillo @ $11m
RH Cespedes @ $10.5m
RH Craig @ $5.5m
RH Nava @ $0.5m
LH Bradley @ $0.5m
RH Betts @ $0.5m

They also have Brock Holt that can back-up. And, Bryce Brentz in AAA, just in case....

Cespedes should be easy to trade - could they also work Victorino into a deal??

They will also need to find another LH bat - but where will they put him?

Some rumors are saying that Boston may try to trade Bogaerts for pitching (Hamels is a name being mentioned).

That's the deal I would have signed Hanley to as well, only gets better because you can play him as a DH too. Nice deal Boston.

I thought it was a sure deal that Boston was going to trade Cespedes?

I'd like to see the Mets and Sox swap OF for pitching. Cuddyer's health is questionable and he'll probably get a decent amount of first base play so I wouldn't mind a dependable 4th outfielder to plug in there.

Boston doing their best Yankee impression! I actually like the Hanley signing, would of liked him in Seattle. But Fat boy Panda at 100 mill? Can't wait to see what his weight balloons to now that he's "fat and happy"

Great pick up with Hanley. As to Sandoval if the team gets him as a Red Sox fan I'd rather they spend that money on a good starting pitcher.

Also with the panda and hanley signing does that mean they are out of the Lester sweepstakes?

Boston fans, if Seattle can sign Lester.

Would you be open to a Iwakuma for Cespedes trade?

1) It by no means removes them from the Lester sweepstakes. If you recall last July, they purged half of their team... With Sandoval & Ramirez they are only sitting at $152 guaranteed payroll. They have plenty of room for Lester. Then consider they are actively shopping Cespedes and his $10m (and likely another OF under contract), the'll have even more room for even more pitching (See: Miller).

2) If Boston signs Lester, they'll be looking for at least two other starters and your Iwakuma proposal would still interest them. They are both in the final year of their contracts and are relatively cheap.... What minor leaguers would Seattle be willing to throw in the deal?

If Seattle can't sign LEster I dont think they can afford to trade Kuma. Their staff is shallow.

But if they did work a trade I dont think Seattle would have to throw in any minor leaguers.

4/88 with a 22M vesting option.

Wow. A potential 5/110 for Hanley??
