Four Texans Who Could Be Cap Casualties « CBS Houston
Houston (CBS Houston) – This off-season will likely feature some high profile roster cuts as the Texans begin to clear high salary players in order to retain some of their younger talent. The folks at overthecap.com have put together a detailed account of the Texans cap situation. Here’s how it relates to some of the Texans highest paid players.
Matt Schaub
He’s on the books for $14,500,000 next year. After this season and Bob McNair’s recent comments, it’s highly unlikely that Schaub will be back in any capacity next season. If cut, Schaub would create $4,000,000 in cap space and $10,500,000 in dead money.
The Texans could increase their cap savings if they designate Schaub a ‘June 1st’ roster cut. That would save $11,000,000 against the cap and only create $3,500,000 in dead money next year and $7,000,000 in 2015. The kicker is that any extra money created wouldn’t be available for the bulk of free agency, which starts on March 11th.
Johnathan Joseph
At the age of 29 and coming off a down year, Joseph could easily become a cap casualty. His cap number for next season is $11,250,000. Cutting him would generate $3,750,000 of cap room and $7,500,000 in dead money. Designating him as a June 1st cut would generate $7,500,000 in cap space and $3,750,000 in dead money.
Restructuring may be a better option for Joseph and the Texans. Cutting him forces the Texans to find a starting corner through the draft or free agency. With needs at QB, RT, RB, and DL the Texans are in no position to create new needs. Depending on what Joseph thinks he is worth on the open market, restructuring to a cheaper two-year deal could be a viable option.
Owen Daniels
Daniels cap number for 2014 is $6,250,000. Releasing him would create $4,500,000 in cap space and only $1,750,000 in dead money. But with Garrett Graham scheduled for unrestricted free agency, cutting Daniels could leave the Texans with just one tight end on the roster, Ryan Griffin.
O’Brien’s philosophy centers around having big pass-catching tight ends. There are a couple of ways the Texans could go. They could let Graham walk and hang on to Daniels. Or they could cut Daniels and look to resign Graham at a cheaper rate.
Danieal Manning
Manning missed the final ten games of the season with a knee injury, but his long-term health prognosis looks good. He expects to be ready by the start of OTAs.
Cutting Manning would generate $4,500,000 in cap relief in 2014 and just $1,500,000 in dead money. The 31-year old was playing at a high level when he went down. His closing speed was some of the best on the team and he was a force against the run. Releasing him would create another need for the Texans unless they are comfortable with Shiloh Keo as a long-term starter.
