Rules are rules, even in the NCAA. There are times however where an officiating crew decides that the letter of the law is nothing more than a bad typo not worth legitimizing. Such is the case in a game that occured on September 10, 2016 in Stillwater as the Oklahoma State Cowboys hosted the Central Michigan Chippewas.
OSU entered the 2016 campaign with a number beside their name and were 1-0 after a win over FCS level Southeastern Louisiana, the first of 3 non-conference home games before getting into Big 12 play, the last of which would be against Pittsburgh.
CMU opted for a more daunting non-conference campaign which saw them split their 4 games to start the season between home and road. The week before, the Chippewas had defeated their own FCS level opponent, Presbyterian, but it didn't result in a number beside their name like it did for OSU. After Stillwater, Central Michigan were looking at a home game against UNLV followed by a road game at Virginia before getting into Mid-American play.
Head Coached by John Bonamego, CMU had dealt with a 2015 season that saw them make it to Bowl eligibility and were hoping for more of the same at the very least this year.
Oklahoma State and Head Coach Mike Gundy were looking for something a little loftier, the Big 12 Championship and perhaps becoming a factor Nationally for both the Best Win-Loss Record and a spot in the Chosen 4. Before they could get into any of that, there was this game against Central Michigan, an midday special that was hyped up as "Come check out these spiffy black uniforms we're gonna wear." With that approach, the Cowboys couldn't lose.
Then the game happened. CMU frustrated OSU throughout the duration of the contest, but ultimately the Pokes would have the ball as time expired. With the clock about to strike 0, their quarterback launched the ball deep and to no one. Oklahoma State was ready to celebrate while Central Michigan looked for a flag. After a quick huddle by the officials, the flag was thrown.
It was decided that since Okla State was attempting to sully the game or whatnot with their tactics that the Chips would get an untimed down, because screw it. The result is one of the more talked about endings of the 2016 season.
Afterwards, the error of the officiating would be brought up, but given that the rule apparently didn't make sense they decided to stick with it. CMU would go 3-1 in non-con play before struggling in the Mid-American to make it to 6-6, leading to a Miami Beach Bowl loss to Tulsa to end the season. Their win, albeit questionable over Oklahoma State would be the highlight of their season.
As for OSU, the Cowboys would rebound with a win over Pittsburgh and then finish 2nd in the Big 12, finishing only behind Oklahoma and getting to 9-3. Whatever laughs Colorado fans had at OSU's expense after the CMU debacle would be muted in San Antonio when the Buffaloes met their former Big 12 cohorts in the Alamo Bowl. Oklahoma State would win big, 38-8 to end the season 10-3 and the Associated Press putting an 11 beside their name once the season was done.
Still, if either Central Michigan or Oklahoma State are remembered for just 1 game during the 2016 season, it's this one. Highlights are by PSC Highlights.
