That particular trade chart was thrown away when the salary cap came around (or maybe Jerrry just lost it at a bar in a drunken stupor). Now without the insane $'s for the number one pick it's probably getting a little closer to reality again than it was a few years back

Actually it held up pretty well to actual trades for years with the salary cap. The outliers would be those ones for that top talent (Ricky W, RGIII, type moves for a guy the coach felt was needed at any cost).

I've been referring to this chart since it came out.

Updating The NFL Draft Trade Value Chart

It used the Jimmy Johnson chart as a base and then made adjustments based on real trades we were seeing. I'm not aware of anyone doing the adjustments since (2009).

Draft value isn't static. Different picks are worth different things in different years. Usually good for a general assessment though.

Cowboys come up with a new chart pretty much every single year. That is the good news. The bad news is this is how Jerry picks it:

It will ultimately come down to how the Rams do with their pick. If they get a franchise quarterback, it was cheap. If the guy they pick is a bust or merely average, they overpaid.

Same for the Titans. They could pretend they are the Browns and not have any of these picks still on the roster in 3-4 years.

That pretty much sums it up. They didn't actually have much to lose, without a good QB they were doomed to be about 8-8 for many more years. Guess they could of picked a better year for QBs, but if the guy they pick turns out good they will be happy with the trade.

If you look at all the examples of big trades to move up in the draft, very very few of them have worked out for the team moving up. They are usually derided by observers after the fact. Herschel Walker. Ricky Williams. RGIII.

Tell Hammer that. Maybe, just maybe he might get this trade. IMO, it's a crap shoot. The Rams haven't made the playoffs in 13 years, they had to do sometning. Just my opinion.

So the odds say it's about time for a deal like this to work for once? :dhd:

It's a great trade for the Titans since they will get much needed help with those extra picks. Time to start building around their stud QB. For the Rams, it's a wait and see. If whoever they select turns out to be a franchise QB in a couple of years, then its a great trade for them as well. If he busts, then the franchise will be in the same realm of the Browns.

I agree with most of your comment, but Mariota is not a stud QB, as of yet. Now maybe he will be in the future. Time will tell.

Stud might be a stretch, but he shows lots of promise IMO. With all these extra picks, if Tenn can capitalize he'll become a stud. Give the kid a line and weapons and lets see what happens.

I agree totally with your comment, but the key words are, if Tenn can capitalize with the extra picks.

Except this is completely wrong. Jared Goff is a much better QB than Marcus Mariota, and the Titans should have drafted him. If you have the chance to draft a franchise QB, you take it, regardless of who else is there.

Tough to say that as Goff has done nothing in the NFL yet. I liked a lot of what Mariota did... Not too loose in the pocket, threw down the field well and showed he can make NFL throws, pretty consistent, great in the red zone when things tighten up. I really liked that he avoided becoming run happy or taking the big hits. Looked actually much better than I thought he would when he went under center... He had some issues, fumbled a bit (but still led the team with the 3rd lowest turnover rate in the league). I thought he held onto the ball a bit long at times. But doing that with that talent around him (great TE, nothing in the backfield to excite you, no true #1 WR, poor defense), I was happily surprised. He exceeded expectations for me for a #2 QB in the draft who had little experience in a pro-style offense.

And no you don't draft a franchise QB if you just did that. Two of them do you no good. And UNTIL Mariota proves he is not going to be that (which obviously he has not yet), you don't go ahead and just grab another one.

Well, it's kind of touch to use NFL performance as a barometer for players who have never played in the NFL.

Exactly... We've seen that Mariota looks on his way to becoming a franchise QB as a rookie, which is ahead of the average curve. So why instead go after Wentz, the best QB in the draft who you don't even know if he will be at that level?
