What are the odds that this professor Mike Lewis is a Patriots fan?

Patriots beat Cowboys for 'best' fans, researcher says

The New England Patriots have the best fans in football.

This is the finding of Emory University professor Mike Lewis, who rated fan bases on tangible measures of obsession, like game attendance and social media following. According to the analytics study, Lewis attempted to take a cold hard look at something that is difficult to quantify.

"These models are used to determine which cities' fans are more willing to spend or follow their teams after controlling for factors like market size and short-term variations in performance," he wrote.

Lewis added (via Comcast SportsNet New England): "The Patriots victory is driven by fans willingness to pay premium prices, strong attendance and phenomenal social media following," Lewis said. "The final competition between the Cowboys and the Patriots was actually determined by the long-term value of the Patriots greater social following. The Patriots have about 2.4 million Twitter followers compared to 1.7 for the Cowboys. Of course this is all relative a team like the Jaguars has just 340 thousand followers."

Lewis, a professor at Emory's Goizueta Business School has a Ph.D from Northwestern, an MBA from the University of Chicago and a masters from the University of Illinois in Industrial Engineering, according to his bio.

The good news about the study is that it is conducted by someone with extensive experience in sports marketing and consumer behavior, so we shouldn't see anyone freak out or overreact to its findings on the internet.

Honestly a little shocked the Chiefs finished as low as they did. The rest of the bottom-5 I expected but I've always thought of Chiefs fans being pretty darn loyal even through the worst of times. Now maybe it is because I live in Chiefs country so I see Chiefs fans everywhere but I have been to quite a few games at Arrowhead and even when the team was terrible they still for the most part sold out the games. Throw in now they have actually been a decent/good team in the league over the last 4 or so years. Thought they would start bumping up this list.

Chiefs fans are overrated. They lost their blackout streak a few years ago when they couldn't sell out, and up until Reid came to town it was easy to find tickets on the secondary market at face value.

They're not bad fans, but they're not among the best, either. They're a middle of the pack fanbase, and they flock to winners (just look at the Royals).

True but I figured the recent success of making the playoffs and not having a losing record here for a while would bump them up a list like this. Now it could be where the fans haven't quite caught up with the product on the field. They were so bad for a while there that it does seem to take a while to win back fans after such a bad showing for a while. Just like the Raiders being 31st in they haven't put a good product on the field for a long time and my guess is if they start winning any time soon it will still take a while to win back fans.

What I get from this is that the Packers need to raise ticket prices to be higher up on the list as they have 78,000 to 79,000 at each game because they are always sold out. Those 80,000 people just cant be accused of paying premium ticket prices I guess since the Packers try to keep the ticket prices in the middle of the cost to attend games in the NFL. They had to raise prices a bit recently to stay around the middle cost in the NFL. They dont want to be to low where the visiting teams wont get a decent share of the revenue split from ticket sales to the games.

Packers introduce variable ticket pricing for 2016 season

“We project this will place us 19th in average ticket price, just below the overall NFL average, the benchmark we use annually to help us determine pricing,” Murphy said in the brochure. “We feel that position reflects a great value for the gameday experience at Lambeau Field and also allows us to maintain a fair visiting team share for our NFL partners.”

Fanbases are hilariously the same when you strip away the winning schtick for any prolonged period of time. Always cracks me up when the circlejerk contest of who has the best fan(tasy) shows up.

oh come on @PDay8810 I was just joking
joking was understood with a visual of Jerry following the team he owns via tweets.
Shoot, Jerry is a sideshow of punch lines just showing up...I understand that, but humor should count. Perhaps you were trying to hard? Anywhohow...feel free to return a :L my way. I remain unsure how all that works. My intentions were not to hurt your board rating if that applies.

Kraft learned of the study beforehand and CHEATED by adding fake social media fans to skew the results.

Well, the media followers obviously tilt the scale, but when it comes to largest fanbase and stadium attendance, I can't see anyone beating Pitts with Dallas close behind.... those 2 fan bases are humongous...

I know. I give up on the M's like 10 times a year and I come back like the crack head I am. Are you really a good fan when you keep supporting a broken down bus? I'll keep rooting for them but I can't argue the fact that I'm probably an idiot to keep on listening to the stupid excuses for their ineptitude.

I have no idea why I blindly watched the Royals before 2010. That was as hopeless a team I could think of for a while.

Emory doesn't even have a football team other than club sports, what the hell does one of their professors know about fan bases

That said I have the utmost respect for the university and medical staff. Had my brain tumor (benign) removed there and their HD department is one of best in country
