If we don't make a bowl game this year, there is no way you can let another year play out.

The biggest problem that I read somewhere else is Nebraska no longer has an identity, and I'd add the patience to try and change to a different one. In hindsight we should never of tried to get away from Husker football after Solich. We were all spoiled by that 90's run and expected greatness EVERY season (and I'm not saying expecting perfection is a bad thing, just we have to deal with only being really good as not an absolute disaster that can't last more than a couple of seasons without us flying off the handle)

By not accepting taking a step back, our flying off the handle has totally fucked Nebraska football. We went with thinking we had to re-invent Husker football with the Clownahan error, learned painfully quickly that didn't work, so tried Pleeny to take us back to that identity, and he had some results, but his biggest success was with Clownsahans players and then the team was trending downward with his own recruits. We all saw it even though the record didn't show it. So then we move on from him (IMO rightfully) but then try to bring in another guy to redefine Husker football into something it's never been and he's starting with players "supposedly" with the talent more in line with the identity Pleeny had. So each time one of these coaches come in, their vision is completely different than the one prior to them, so they struggle with trying to run their system with players that don't have the required skills. We all flip the fuck out (rightfully so! LOL) and then they don't even have a legitimate chance to see if it would work. And even though I was originally optimistic about Riley, I no longer believe he was a good hire and I don't see his style ever succeeding here, but I have no idea how to get out of the situation gracefully. It would really be awesome if he "chose" to retire after next year. Maybe we could re-structure his contract to include a Huuuuuge retirement package....aka pay him is guaranteed money to retire without firing him! LOL

I get the setbacks from firing people, but I said it before and I'll say it again.......look at the uphill climb Penn State had compared to what we will have if we fire Riley.

If we don't make a bowl game this year you have to end it. This is like an infection and we just keep thinking that if we wait longer it will get better but it keeps getting worse.

But they had a huge hurdle to overcome, but they didn't try and completely re-invent the identity and style of football they played. Also, their obstacles were totally understandable by the fan base and thus had patience. Our problems our self inflicted set-backs all the time. (Not saying that Penn St. University isn't responsible for how they got there, but it's a bit different)

I understand what you are saying about Riley and if he doesn't make a bowl, I understand firing him. I'm just saying each time we do this, it makes hiring a really good coach that may be able to bring us back that much harder. We are then left with trying to find a lottery ticket coach that just hasn't had a shot so no-body knows the guys capabilities yet.

In a way, that is what Riley was. Or maybe that is just how I rationalized it. I thought he had the skills, but lacked the opportunities that Nebraska could have offered in better recruiting and facilities. Turns out those saying he's got a record of just being a mediocre coach were right all along.

In my opinion if you fire Riley after this year then he never even had a chance to begin with.

You're also looking at very realistically only winning 4 games next year with a new coach.

The downside risk at this point is worth keeping Riley for 1 more year and the upside potential

Yep, and it buys us time to be patient and find the correct new AD and give them time to "evaluate" Riley as someone else put while working to find a replacement coach that will hopefully have some vision of type of football identity that may work at Nebraska.

I want the new AD to have some strong thoughts on the direction of Husker football and when he does start a head coaching search, I want them to have numerous long conversations to see if that prospective coach shares the same key visions. Not a quick flight in and a couple hour meeting. I want many meetings with several candidates!!

I get all the overthinking, but trust me.......if we don't make a bowl game.......he is gone.

This is all about money when it comes down to it.

Tell that to Dabo. Or Dantonio. Or Gundy. Or Franklin.

Dabo, Dantonio, and Gundy would have been fired in their 3rd year At Nebraska.

The media and fan base would have been losing their shit on Franklin in year 3 when he started (2-2) with a loss to Pitt and a 10 - 49 blowout loss to Michigan.

I know you are right, and if that's the case he will be fired this season. I don't see us bowling this season.

Me neither.

Winning 5 of the remaining 9 will mean we won some that we weren't expected to.

You're probably right. And that says a lot more about our fans than it does those coaches.

Also, ironic that those are some of the names that get thrown out when people say "throw $10M at a proven winner!!!!"

Also not sure why Gundy is in the conversation.

Only Dabo could garner that kind of money.

The other 3 haven't earned anything close to that.

I would absolutely love it if we had somebody to replace the guy that we fired as athletic director. it seems like we just fire these guys and have no sense of direction of who were going to hire why can't we have a guy in place so when we fire somebody we immediately have someone to replace them. Be it Tom rathman or Trev Alberts whoever it may be but we already have that in place now we're starting a search and we just have our dicks in our hands basically

They said they are starting a "targeted search."

So they already had their main guys in mind.

Also, it will be Rimington.
