Edgar has replaced HoJo as the M's hitting coach, WOW! Best news of the season, and I hope it wasn't too late.

So another hire under Jack replaced and it is yet to fall back on the one ultimately responsible...sigh.

It's hard to get too excited in terms of how much it can help the pile of shit we have offensively, but Edgar is amazing, and I'm glad he's going to be a part of the MLB club.

He'd done some good things with kids in the minors, so we'll see.

My issue with it is that Edgar being the greatest M's player of all time (my opinion) and there is only one way to go as a coach and that is down. How is the eventual breakup going to go down? I hope he finishes the season and just walks away at the end going back to being a rover coach.

Wow, really interesting choice.

My first two reactions are:

1. Thank god we fired Howard Johnson.
2. I hope this hire was made because they actually believe he will be a good coach. I don't want him to be our hitting coach just because of who he is and the hitter he once was. One of the things that excites me about hiring Edgar is that he was an extremely patient hitter and drew a lot of walks. The Mariners really need to work on their OBP.

He's been working with minor league kids for awhile now. I think he's going to be good at talking to players. We hear from A fraud and Griffey and on and on about how Edgar could break things down succinctly for them when they were struggling.

A pure Mariner move. Hiring legit hitters...expensive. Hiring a M's legend who makes M's fan happy...priceless.

This, if the players don't hit you don't want to see the team fire Edgar. I always thought he would end up as a hitting coach but maybe when the team was in better shape.

That being said good luck Edgar!

I think with a former player of his stature, he would be given the option to step down. I don't think the team would fire him unless he would refuse to step down.

I'm glad a change was made in the coaching. Guys like Cano, Cruz, Seager, Lomo, Trumbo, Jackson, and Smith are all hitters who should be at or above average hitters, especially in simple situations like getting a run in from 3rd with less than 2 outs. There have been too many guys fall into extended slumps here for it to be a coincidence. Whatever approach was being taught was either not sinking in or it was the wrong one.

Edgar was a master at hitting the baseball. Hopefully he can communicate that effectively to get this offense at least to a respectable level. Just putting the bat on the ball should be step one (Zunino)

Agree... Edgar is my favorite Mariner... They're aren't too many examples of a Coach who had a HOF type of a career that went on to be a very successful coach w/ the team he played for...

The Cubs parted ways w/ Ryan Sandberg as a coach in their minors/majors...

But you can tell guys what to do til you are blue in the face, but if they don't, or can't, do it it doesn't matter. Howard Johnson was a pretty good darn player in his day as well. I think the timing is set up for Edgar to come out looking like a prince because law of averages for these veteran hitters say they are about to turn it around IF they are ever going to turn it around this year.
