Harbaugh brought up an interesting idea yesterday while speaking at an event in Ohio; differing compensation for athletes until after they are out of the NCAA control:

On paying college football players, Jim Harbaugh has other ideas

-----------------------
Harbaugh has ideas, though. He proposed exploring a deferred compensation package between the player and school for later on, built on via various revenue streams.

Like the Amazon Prime reality series the Michigan football program was the focus of this spring, and netted the athletic department a $2.25 million windfall.

"I think that's a possibility," Harbaugh said. "And we're exploring that right now. I'm looking at if we do an Amazon TV show again, is there a way we can get $1,000 in stock in Amazon possibly? Or deferred compensation?

"Those will be questions for the NCAA."
-----------------------

I wonder how that would fall under NCAA rules? Would it be an impermissible benefit if something was simply promised after graduation or their departure? I think it especially makes sense in the case of the Amazon special scenario. Amazon, and Michigan, are making a ton of money by showing these athletes behind the scenes. Some sort of delayed compensation essentially bypasses NCAA rules. Definitely an interesting take and another layer to the debate.

Because it's compensation for playing.

Duh.
Yes, but not until they graduate. They aren't receiving compensation while eligible during NCAA play. Is simply the promise of compensation after the fact compensation in of itself? I mean, I don't know the specifics of the NCAA rulebook but I'd have to imagine this lands in a grey area.

We all know how Harbaugh loves to hover in grey areas.

Also,
Meyer “hey if you come to Ohio State, we promise we will pay you $100k after you leave school” sounds perfectly ok to you?

I mean, it does sound OK to me but that would be a violation so I see your point.

I guess. Seems like a reasonable idea though, one that wouldn't have much impact on the current system.

Until Alabama/Saban compensates with better contracts, then you'll want to ban that shit with the quickness.

Btw, how bad does a Michigan education suck that $1000 worth of amazon stock is a good deal after you get out of school?

Does that dumbass even realize the price of Amazon stock? Enjoy your half a single stock for wasting your years at Michigan?

It’s to compensate for their playing football so it sounds like they are over paying.

I prefer they leave it as it is. You do not have to play college sports. You are not being forced.

To be honest, I'm not worried because Michigan wouldn't have a problem outspending most universities.

We all know how Harbaugh loves to hover in grey areas.

You mean, like, that grey area of getting his shit pushed in by his rivals and not being able to beat any team with a pulse?

You mean that kind of grey area? If so, I totally agree.

Yeah but you don't now, so you won't then.

Just like Texas fans like to say how they can spend the most, but they never actually do.

Which schools spend the most on college football? Where does Syracuse rank?

1. Alabama, $56.21 million
Talk about a smart investment. Alabama pours money into its football program like no other. The returns have been enormous.

7. Michigan, $36.60 million

19. Texas, $30.27 million
Despite bringing in more revenue than any school in the country, Texas ranks just 19th in reported spending on its football program.

Most are really being compensated fairly well. The vast majority who will not go to the next level get a free or greatly discounted college education. They also get to be a minor celebrity in the region which makes getting a good job easier. I deal with a sales rep who played for Bobby Knight at IU. He was a career 2 pts a game player. Didn't finish college. Even he admits that he got the well paying job he has due to playing at IU. I bet 4down20 would agree that a former Bama player would have no issue getting a job in the state of Alabama, even if he was a role player.
