Well that's where Michigan and northern schools in general get screwed with most of the talent being in the South. In the South there is a much larger concentration of talent, and tons of good football schools, so it's very easy for a kid to have his parents drive him to Georgia or Alabama if he's from Florida for an unofficial visit.

Pretty tough getting many kids from Florida or Texas or California to come for anything but their official visit.

Actually Michigan has got a pretty good national recruiting capability, with pipelines to Florida, California and Texas. Not to say they don't have an uphill struggle when competing with the local schools, but they can get their share from outside the midwest.

Exactly...kids cannot afford unofficial visits (kid pays his own way) to far away destinations and are unfortunately generally limited to taking only their five allotted official visits (paid by recruiting school) to long distance schools.

What sucks about the current rules is that kids cannot begin taking any of their five official visits until the first day of senior year high school in early September.

With earlier and earlier recruiting/committing occurring each year, this rule hurts the out-of-the-way schools located in low population states which rely heavily upon long distance recruits!

This is why I agree with Jerry DiNardo of the BTN when he says that the rule should be changed to allow kids to take official visits during the Summer prior to beginning their high school senior year semester.

How do they stop it?
We don't really and it's never been stated as an "official" policy. Generally Hoke doesn't consider you "committed" unless you stop taking visits and has pulled offers from kids who take visits elsewhere. But he's made quite a few exceptions to this rule, especially with higher ranked recruits (David Dawson) or kids that fill a very important position of need.
