It was absolutely idiotic for SF to even let Denver talk to Kaep about a restructure.

They should have stood firm in the "he'll be a 49er this coming season" stance. Now Kaep is going to be pissed if a trade doesn't happen which makes him coming back much, much more difficult. Meaning SF just lost some of their leverage.

Now not only will they get peanuts in return for a legit starting NFL QB, they likely are going to have to pay some of his salary to be rid of the whole headache that would happen if Kaep were still on the roster come training camp.

Denver is playing SF like a fiddle by asking them to try and cover some of the salary. Denver is absolutely desperate for a QB and yet are still acting like they are OK with moving forward with Mark Sanchez. SF should send Elway a gif of the butt fumble and say good luck defending your championship and then not take a call from them for or a week or two.

The moment Kelly was hired he should have been talking about Kaep like he was the next Steve Young and how there was no chance they were going to move him. Even if that wasn't the plan.

Good summary of the situation. This is what happens though of bad teams panic. It is why FA goes so crazy the first couple of days of teams panicking and spending way too much for players most other teams were more than willing to let walk. This is what has been so great about Elway is he has never really shown much panic. He just waits for others to make the mistakes and then swoops in like we saw with Okung and his contract.

Now I will say though San Fran at first did try to sell it that way that they were excited to have him back. The problem was that Kapernick's agent spoke up about how much he didn't want to be there anymore. Kind of put them in a bad spot when you have a player very outspoken about how they want out of Dodge. Hard to sell the idea that you still want him and can't wait to work with him.

I don't think he's ever going to really fit (or enjoy) the NFL and will end up back in college soon enough.

Having already produced back-to-back, 10-win seasons with Nick Foles at QB (an injured Nick Foles in 2014), that seems kind of silly.

You misspelled "football ret*rded."

Did the hoop censor you? Weird.

Say what you want about Kaep but the guy has 4 playoff wins and has a QB rating in the playoffs in the top 20 in the history of the league equal to guys like Manning, Brady and Favre.

Giving up on a QB under the age of 30 with his experience and production for next to nothing in return like SF is about to do is probably the dumbest thing we have seen in the NFL in a decade.

This is a league where guys like AJ Feeley and Kevin Kolb, with little experience, were traded for 2nd round picks. Sounds like Kaep is going to go for less than that.

And sure you might say "but oh the contract". Kaep's contract is fine in today's league. It is literally one of the cheapest QB deals in the league handed out to any starter not under a rookie deal.

How SF fan's aren't outside SF headquarters demanding Baalke head on a pike after one of the greatest collapses we have seen of a SB contending team in such a short span is beyond me.

But hey....good luck with Gabbert. That doesn't have disaster written all over it.

Riding the coat tails of the 49ers' gluttony of talent and great coaching does not make Kaepernick great. The guy can't read a defense. He had good playoff numbers the first couple of years (small sample size) because he had amazing protection. He could hold on to the ball forever like he always does & eventually find someone open if he wasn't running out of bounds for a loss (multiple times) or missing things like this:

kapwat.0.gif

Staring down 1 receiver for 5 seconds & then running is not a recipe for success. Harbaugh made Alex Smith look like an all-pro' too, and Alex Smith sucks.

I agree Kaep isn't great. And yes he did ride the coattails of a talented defense and a run heavy offense. But he is a capable QB of managing a game while also adding one hell of a threat with his legs. Is he ever going to be Joe Montana? Of course not. But he is more than capable of winning a SB with the right surrounding cast.

You are a SF fan so maybe you don't know this because of your illustrious QB history but even those types of QB's are difficult to find in this league. There really could be a decade of football in SF before they find a QB capable of getting a team as deep into the playoffs as Kaep has already done.

Understand what SF is doing: They are taking a young QB that was good enough to make them perennial contenders and are dumping him after a single down year when the team was staffed with one of the most ill-qualified head coaching candidates that we have ever seen in the league in Tomsula after a year of absolute roster upheaval. Joe Montana or Steve Young in their prime wasn't leading last year's 49er squad to a 500 record.

You can blame Kaep all you want for last year but the blame should ALL be placed at one person and only one person's feet:

20151102__SJM-THOMPSON-1103-02~1_300.JPG

He fought and won an internal battle for control and jettisoned a winning and proven coach. And then he put out a roster that didn't have the talent to win and to make matters worse he paired that roster with a head coach that everyone with half a brain knew was going to be a complete failure.

He has jettisoned am lot of talent since those 10 win seasons. Those Eagle teams were much more talented than the current Niners, but they still wouldn't have won 10 games if they played in the NFC West. Do you trust in Baalke to make good decisions, lording over Chip?

It wasn't a single bad season, he performed worse each year, even under Harbaugh. Harbaugh would have improved last year, though.

No, he doesn't, but that's ok. Not saying he's good or great or doesn't have his weaknesses.

He has jettisoned am lot of talent since those 10 win seasons.

Hence, he's not a good GM. But give him even a decent amount of talent, and he'll have the 49ers in the playoffs again (it'll take a couple of years at least while Connor Cook is developing of course :D).

Developing into what? Brian Hoyer? Drew Stanton? Kirk Cousins? Don't trust Michigan St. QBs to become anything special.

Latest news is that Kaepernick is willing to take a pay cut to get out SF but not as much Denver wants him too, apparently they want him to take a paycut for 2017 as well.

Denver should just bite the bullet by offer up another pick in 2017 in exchange for the Niners cutting a check to lower Kaps base pay & cap hit when traded. They should have plenty of compensation picks in 2017 to offset losing another late round pick.

What I meant by that was that he was winning with somebody else's players that were already in place. The Niners don't have that luxury. Even if he's not the GM, he's going to have a big say in what players are brought in. The players he has brought in thus far to the Eagles didn't exactly make a strong statement. When he had a roster more to his liking, he didn't win 10 games.

The Kaepernick situation is very interesting. Either case he's played his last snap as a 49er IMO

That's true, and it's going to take a couple of years before the Niners can rebulid into a playoff contender (at least). But that's Baalke's job, not Kelly's.

Also, the rosters with which Kelly won were not amazing rosters. Like I said: Nick Foles. Not exactly all pro'.
