Most people had them as a playoffs contender....possibly sneaking in the playoffs.

Nobody thought Boston would be a top 2 in the East or top 4 in the league after Hayward went down in the season opener.

Why nobody? They got there last year without Hayward. It seems it would hinge on IT versus Irving.

I hear you but most people thought teams like Cleveland, Washington, and Toronto would all finish above them after that injury

I would give it to Casey. Most people thought they would finish 4th or 5th in the East. Almost everyone had Boston, Cleveland, and Washington finishing ahead of them. Saw some preseason predictions with Milwaukee finishing ahead of them.

If you're not going to give a coach COY after his team finishes with 60+ wins after they were only projected to win 47 or 48 games then when can that coach every win COY?

For me, my ballot would look like this.

Casey
Stotts
D'Antoni
Snyder
Stevens

I see your point. But if Utah has turned a corner and they end up getting 46 to 50 wins this year, there's nothing really he can do the next year to win it next year if 60 is been there done that or expected because Gobert and Mitchell did it.

Coach of the Year is succeeding/surprising through adversity or it's true surprise or taking a good but not great team to the max. I mean, Jerry Sloan never won Coach of the Year and the Jazz have either lead the league or been really close to the best record. It is a regular season award. And part of the reason why he never won was because they were expected to win. True, they had Stockton and Malone, but it was a true miss in my opinion.

Why? I understand Cleveland. But Washington and Toronto, always seemed like a a third to fourth seed to me. Boston was missing someone they didn't have the prior year. So people should not of assumed they were gonna drop so much. Who did they give up to get Hayward? No one should tell me IT because they got Irving.

People really valued what Hayward meant to this team. I can't blame them since his replacements were Tatum (a rookie) and Brown who was in his 2nd year and didn't look like a top pick last year.

Ok, I saw Hayward as a big part if they were to change their system toward him from last year. And if you add someone that big, you will. I just didn't think that anyone they had to cut to make way for his salary made that team that much worse. But maybe I over evaluate Stevens.

Well, I can guarantee it ain't Van Gundy. At this point I want to get a coach on a 2-way contract.

Kyrie is playing defense. COY candidate automatically. Only coaching more impressive is Harden playing defense.

It should be Casey. He totally changed the way they played this year, finally moving away from garbage ass isolations. That move, along with developing young players to fill out the bench, is the reason Toronto are contenders for the first time and not just pretenders we've seen the last 4 years or so. Coaching literally reshaped this team so what more do you need to qualify for COACH of the Year
