Right now the Caps have 19 players under contract:

2 Goalies

7 Defensemen

10 Forwards

The caps space that is left is just over 8 million.

If we assume that Flash goes to arbitration and gets around 3 million, which is a joke but the likely outcome, that leaves one hole on the forward lines with 5 million to spend. That hole will likely be filled by a second line veteran type player (even if he does not play on the second line) at a cap hit around 1.5 mil)

This leaves us 3.5 million to work with, more if we can shop Nylander out again to Finland or Chechnya or fucking Iraq for all I care....

At the deadline, that equates to around 15million.

Alzner, Varlamov and Neuvirth are all RFAs after this season

Knuble, Semin, Laich, Gordon, Bradley, Poti and Erskine are all UFAs

The guys in bold are priorities, in my opinion, to get an extension before the season ends....

I have to believe that Varlamov is going to wait until after the season is done to re-sign. Not a doubt he will re-sign, just think he'll wait and see how much he would be able to get after he is able to get a full year under his belt. Although I think if the Ca[s are able to sign him to an extention before the year is up, they could get somewhat of a discount.
