Can anyone be a great DC in the BigXII? It's been awhile seen anyone have a Top defense in the league. Some great defensive minded coaches have came to this league and change philosophies to bend not break.

It's odd how these leagues are

In the SEC no pass happy offense can survive an entire year, and the quarterbacks in the league suck

In the Big 12 its the opposite only Bill Snyder and Kansas State has managed to have any success playing a non- pass happy offense and solid defense

The Pac-12 is similar to the Big 12 with David Shaw and Stanford being the only true outlier.

The Big 10 is similar to the SEC except the Big 10 actually has good quarterbacks

ACC is a league that is a combination of the Big 10 and SEC

It was like an offensive arms race to me. Everyone wanted to keep up with the scoring at the expense of good defense. Mutually Assured Destruction.

TCU is a great example. They had one of the best defenses in the country. Then they joined the Big 12 and continued to play decent defense. But as soon as they went to Air Raid (or whatever form of it they want to call it), their defense plummeted. When you score in under 2 minutes, not only do you force your defense to defend more plays, you also force them to defend with little rest.

Hey now. SEC has QB's playing on Sunday. Eli, Stafford, Cam, Dak, gabbert, Cutler off the top of my head. Almost 1/5 of the starters in the NFL from SEC seems about average.

Well, it's relative to what you think is acceptable defense in today's environment. I prefer yards per play since we go faster overall than most conferences outside the Pac 12 and have for a long time now. The following coordinators have been able to place in the top 25 in the last 10 years using this metric. As you will notice, when we use to have big name coordinators in the Big 12 they did pretty well. We just really don't anymore...

2016 Phil Bennett - Baylor 24th
2015 Mark Stoops - Oklahoma 14th
2014 Vance Bedford - Texas 6th
2014 Dick Bumpas - TCU 12th
2013 Dick Bumpas - TCU 9th
2013 Phil Bennett - Baylor 15th
2013 Glenn Spencer - Oklahoma St 17th
2013 Tom Hayes - Kansas St 24th
2011 Manny Diaz - Texas 8th
2011 Tim DeRuyter - Texas A&M 14th
2010 Carl Pelini - Nebraska 7th
2010 Will Muschamp - Texas 12th
2010 Tim DeRuyter - Texas A&M 16th
2010 Bill Young - Oklahoma St 22nd
2009 Will Muschamp - Texas 1st
2009 Carl Pelini - Nebraska 3rd
2009 Brent Venables - Oklahoma 8th
2009 Bill Young - Oklahoma St 18th
2009 Ruffin McNeill - Texas Tech 22nd
2007 Bill Young - Kansas 19th

Well, to be fair, you guys brought the air raid to the conference and won a national championship with it. Texas Tech copied and had success, the rest is history...

It appears to me that 3 time Broyles finalist Dick Bumpas meant a little more to TCU than people gave him credit for. Patterson hasn't had a good defense since he retired after 2014...

P.S. And they were Air Raid in 2014, his final season. Still were good on defense...

When did Gabbert play in the SEC?

Good point 5 off the top of my head, so 1/6th

Your original point does still stand though. The SEC does alright in producing quality QB's.

One thing about the XII that is sort of unfair to the coordinators is almost everybody runs a HUNH offense and it really puts your defense at a disadvantage with getting little rest constantly before coming back on the field. Plus it also means a longer game with more plays. I don't mind the HUNH but it definitely comes with it's negatives.

Bob Stoops won a NC as a SEC DC,
Charlie Strong was a defensive mastermind in the SEC
Manny Diaz was on the fast track to a HC gig as a SEC DC and looks good again in the ACC, processed.
Gary Patterson won a Rose bowl and was known for his defense

Big12 is where good DC's go to die

Rules changes point to no.

Defense is going away in the SEC as well due to all the offense helping rule changes. The game is being dumbed down.
