From the list, one movie I can watch over and over, Patton.

I saw it when it came out in the movie theatres and I still watch it today.

Saving Private Ryan is a good, intense, make you feel like War sucks movie.

I can also watch Battle of the Bulge over and over. I really enjoy the German tank commander in that movie.

Kelly's Heroes is entertaining, but not a real war movie, IMHO.

No mention of the Longest Day or Where Eagles Dare or Dirty Dozen or Green Berets.

Wow. Midway? It told the story fairly accurately but the needless father son dynamic was needlessly hokey.

Patton is the gold standard of standard length films. Full Metal Jacket is a close second. Band of Brothers is the best war movie albeit in a longer form.

Joyeaux Noel, a Midnight Clear, and Paths of Glory are some great anti-war war movies.

A Bridge Too Far should get special recognition as a bridge film from the glorious war films to the more realistic cold hard war films that would follow it.

We Were Soldiers was a really underrated film.

This was just fantastic but I am not sure you could call it a movie so it should not be considered. Same with Generation Kill. Great but not a movie.

Apacolypse Now.

Shout out to Casualties of War with Michael J. Fox. Don't laugh. It was good.

Which one is it?
Of the ones you listed, Full Metal Jacket. The Hurt Locker would have been the one I'd have chosen.

I feel Saving Private Ryan is a bit overrated.

Curious, but why not?

Takes place during a war. Main characters are all soldiers. Has battle scenes. Lots of battle scenes.

Just because it's a comedy?

Letters From Iwo Jima (2006)

Was the Outlaw Josey Wales not a war movie? If so, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly would also be one. Fort Apache? Or are they considered Westerns?

Would disagree on Thin Red Line.

Would be willing to listen to a theory that I just didn't get it though.

My two is Patton and the one the Sooner posted, In Harms Way. I saw the listing with Thin Red Line and it made me think of another good movie, Big Red One w/Lee Marvin.
And Kelly's Heroes was a damn fine movie

A Bridge too far was not well received because I believe it was too accurate with some mistakes that were made in the war.

In the spirit of "outside the box" war movie.

Zulu (1964) (not to be confused with Zulu Dawn the prequel to Zulu)

Even the casual war movie buff must have this movie in his "seen it" column.
And there is no excuse. YouTube has the full movie and it's insanely high quality.
