Baseball: Old Timey NL or the AL game?

Which baseball is better? AL or NL?

  • AL- DH is better than watching a pitcher ruin the art of hitting

  • NL - Classic, pure baseball rules

  • Baseball is baseball, who cares?

Watching Tony Larussa or Joe Maddon walk to the mound 16 times in one game doesn't conjure up images of strategy, but it does make me contemplate buying another gun.
I'm pretty sure if you clocked games, 90% of the longest ones would be Red Sox vs Yankees. You guys take your sweet time.

The DH does one important thing: it extends the shelf life of players. I'll watch baseball either way so I don't mind both leagues having different rules.

The DH is kinda the welfare of baseball. Hey pitchers, learn to hit! Hey batters, learn to field!

Your own links support that the DH was introduced into MLB by the AL owners in 1973. Their vote to do so was not unanimous. These FACTS are outlandish to you, chest beater?
lol chest beater

you really have a phobia about being wrong huh?

i never denied the fact the AL adopted the DH in 1973...you refuse to accept the fact the notion was 70+ years older than the rule....which has been my standing point.

do you have a link to me denying the DH was adopted in 1973?

i'll hold my breath...

I hate the DH. When we were kids, if you didn't get your ass out in the field and chase after balls, you didn't get to hit. That's about as simple as it gets for me.

The DH is an abomination. It only exists to keep weak-minded people entertained because they can't grasp the beauty and intricacy of the game as it is meant to be played.

You guys? I'm old and I've been reduced to playing softball nowadays. I also don't care too much about the DH issue one way or the other.

I know that the Yankees and Red Sox' philosophy of taking a lot of pitches and making the pitchers work more does get tedious and contributes to making the games last too long, but that is not the only factor. I have had a huge issue with the strike zone for many years and I believe that if the umpires would call the strike zone as it is defined the game would move along much quicker. Keeping the batters in the box in between pitches, making the slower pitchers throw the damn ball would help as well.

As for the welfare comment, the same could be said for having 1, many times 2 automatic outs at the bottom of the order.

There is no beauty or intricacy in watching a pitcher who sports a .027 BA striding up to the plate.

Maddon is a numbers guy, the numbers actually favor putting your worst hitter in the 8 hole...
Numbers aside, I like it. After the first the nine guy leads into the leadoff. I always like the nine hole as an apprenticeship for the leadoff man if possible.

True, but thats a slippery slope argument. Would we need to replace the Catcher with a 2nd DH 10 years from now?

The logic behind it is sound... And I think I agree with the logic in having the 8th be your worst hitter and the 9 be a second lead off...

What's everybodys thoughts about my earlier proposal??

A pitcher can ONLY be opted to have a designated hitter if that pitcher has an OBP of .250 or less... It would be gimmicky and very confusing, but I think it would work!!!

Hehehe, well most managers value defense in the middle of the field positions so they will tolerate light hitting catchers, shortstops and CF's if the D is good enough.

Hall of Famers have a right to be wrong about things occasionally.
so your contention is, in 1906 people (namely connie mack and his forward thinking predecessors) were weak minded and had trouble grasping the beauty and intricacy of the game?

Look at you! You got it on the first try!! Pretty impressive for an AL fan.

Be honest. You used a designated reader, didn't you?

At what point in the season do we first get to look at Pitchers OBPs? Or are you thinking of an AB minimum that needs to be reached?

I've been wondering, when was the last time a position other than P was DHd for? Has it ever happened? Can it even happen?

That's really gotta sting for a position player.

(I remember Leyland using Ramon Santiago as the DH. Was not pleased. Porcello is as good of a hitter, not really, but close enough.)
