Baseball: Old Timey NL or the AL game?

Which baseball is better? AL or NL?

  • AL- DH is better than watching a pitcher ruin the art of hitting

  • NL - Classic, pure baseball rules

  • Baseball is baseball, who cares?

Which is best?

Personally, its the AL...DH. the NBA adopted a 3 pt line, the NFL no longer plays on a "grid" and allows the forward pass...

Connie mack was way ahead of his time...

Your thoughts?

Purists love talking strategy, but if the strategy is common sense, then how much strategy is it really??

I would much rather watch a NON automatic out... With that said though, there is nothing better than watching a pitcher who is actually a decent hitter...

I wouldn't mind a compromise in that, if you are going to bunt with your pitcher, you must use a designated hitter(pitcher is not taken out of the game)... Or even more simply, if your pitcher has an OBP of .250 or less you can opt into using a DH, in all other situations the pitcher must hit...

i just cant see why the NL is the ONLY conference/division/etc that uses its own set of original rules.

imagine in football if the AFC was todays game, but the NFC didnt allow a forward pass?
eastern conference in the nba can use 3's...no 3 pt line in the west?

I actually like having different rules in the different leagues... Don't have enough valid reasoning, but I like it... almost as much as Mike Francesa likes Brandon Inge...

I could pretend that NL baseball is better, but Im not gonna bother.

Most pitchers are an embarrassment in the box. Nobody's got time fer that.

That said, I hate full time DHs. (Billy Butlers going to try and shake the stigma this year. Im not buying it.). Bothers me when old fat guys drag out their career because they can still drive a hanging curve 400 feet.

(Is Joe Maddon going to stuck with the pitcher in the 8 spot? Or was he just doing it last night because he knew Lestah wouldn't go past 5? )

Maddon is a numbers guy, the numbers actually favor putting your worst hitter in the 8 hole...

There is the game of baseball. It is still played in the National League. Then, there is baseball entertainment. It is foisted upon us by the American League, and like an invasive species without natural check, it has spread throughout Americas past time. Inevitably, this perversion of the game has accelerated its decline.

give us your thoughts on the forward pass, 3 pt line (and dunking), and the legal slapshot.

all were once frowned upon in all 3 sports, or sometimes you were penalized for them.

The DH was created by the American League owners in a desperate attempt to boost attendance. The primary intent was to boost scoring. A secondary aspect was to create a slot in the lineup for a popular star with diminishing fielding skills but smart and capable at the plate. ALL of this was purposed to increase attendance. The AL owners could give a rats ass about the game itself.

As you pointed out, those concern three unrelated sports. The state of the sardine fishery means diddly squat to a wheat farmer in North Dakota.

connie mack (NL)

The designated hitter idea was raised by Philadelphia Athletics manager Connie Mack in 1906, though he was not the first to propose it. The rumors were that he grew weary of watching Eddie Plank and Charles Bender flail at pitches when at bat. Mack's proposal received little support and was even lambasted by the press as "wrong theoretically". The notion did not die. In the late 1920s, National League president John Heydler made a number of attempts to introduce a 10th man designated hitter as a way to speed up the game, and almost convinced National League clubs to agree to try it during spring training in 1929.

rethink your facts

The DH is a recent phenomenon, perverting the game since 1973. By and large, acolytes of the DH and baseball entertainment are whippersnappers who never knew the pure game when it ruled continents and islands alike.
