Damn. Before the Marino draft? Sporting News is cool. I had a subscription as a kid, too.

Details are sketchy now, but yeah...many yrs before the '83 draft....my 1st recollection of actually paying any attention to the NFL draft was early 70s. The '72 season for sure because the Steelers drafted this guy out of TN St...QB name Joe Gilliam...the guy on the left in my avatar.

Can't recall the first draft i ever watched. Had to be late 80's, early 90's. But I've been hooked since. It's like Christmas for me (but I'm a Lions fan).

People he is wrong for not going are pretty much clueless IMO. Maybe he wants to share the moment with friends and family, how can that be a bad thing?

Don't get me wrong...I'm a huge draft guy...but I rarely ever watch it live.

Jefferson Street Joe.....

I've never much cared to watch the drafts, too many busts to count on anything from it.

Reading after the fact has always been good enough for me. It sure as hell isn't must see TV.

Spot on!...Jefferson St Joe! Sadly, died homeless or thereabouts.

I enjoy playing GM on this board a lot more than watching the actual draft....lol

It's the first official day of your new career, soon to make you a millionaire, but these guys can't be bothered to show up?

Players are not officially in the NFL until the contracts are signed sometime after the draft...the draft itself has become a sideshow imo....to the point that they have taken the show on the road now.

I'm not the biggest Mayfield guy, but this isn't something he should be taking grief over. He wants to spent that time on draft day with family. He's high profile because of his position etc, but he won't be the only name brand not going to the draft.

How does he know it's the first day of his career?

How does he know he's getting drafted? Pretty simple for the upper echelon guys. Could he potentially slip to the 2nd round (and day 2)? Theoretically, but highly unlikely (unless he's planning to release some home made film of a gas mask bong, date r*pe, or other criminal activity).

Are you guaranteeing he's drafted in round 1?

Besides if it's possible he slips to late 20 why sit there just to be shown waiting.

Not attending?

I like that in a guy.

The whole draft thing is just pomp and circumstance and not a lot else.

Didn't Thermal Thomas have a big 1st rd party and slip to 2nd round? Bugged him so much he forgot his helmet in a Super Bowl.

Just stay at home, don't even watch.

Que sera sera......

Yeah that's exactly why he forgot his helmet. :L

People who can't string together a coherent sentence are equally pretty much clueless.

It's also something he shouldn't be broadcasting to the world. Yet he has and he should be free from criticism? Seriously?

Why not? If he's not going, he's not going. I see nothing wrong with a statement on it.

No...Criticize the choice as much as you want or need to...but I still wouldn't go if I were him...screw slapping hands and hugging Goodell and all of the pageantry of this made for TV event.
