The more I think about it the harder it really is to come up with another band for the number 3 spot. I mean after the Beatles in the '60s every band wanted to be like them, for the '70s it was LZ. Then who? I just can't think of any other band that had that kind of influence as those two.

Sabbath is my fav.

There are so many variables...I mean, would the Beatles have ended up as half the band they did, had they not met Dylan and smoked a little pot?

Sabbath

EOT

Good call. I lost interest in Sabbath after their 1st 2, but they might be higher than #3. They basically invented metal. Someone mentioned Deep Purple who were making similnar music to Zep at the same time and they were popular. Nobody who anyone heard of sounded like Sabbath.

I don't know, more bands tried to sound like Zeppelin than Sabbath, Sabbath was really not as well received as Zeppelin when they first came out. Frankly I prefer more of Sabbath's music than Zeppelin's.

I think it's the right progression tho. Whether bands tried to sound like Sabbath is irrelevant, as Iommi is/was the riff-master and every pseudo-rock song since has been but a copy or alteration.

It has to be Sabbath IMO

I don't see Sabbath as influencial. I like his music and all, but he is a 1-of-a-kind performer. If you try to imitate him, you look bad. Beatles still have songs being imitated by modern bands. Their music is still being heard.

Legendary band but not influencial

I guarantee, if you ask every band that even resembles rock, hard rock, metal or even punk, Sabbath will be cited as a main influence.

And if we're including solo artist, here are some for different genres that were very influential

Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, Kenny Rogers, Garth Brooks, Neil Diamond

I'm not a metal fan but I defy anyone to name a metal band who doesn't cite Sabbath as an influence.

Brian May and Freddie Mercury might be the best singer/guitarist combo of all time. Arguable for sure.

No, there is one band who names Uriah Heep as their influence, can't remember who it is right now, my brother knows because he is a big fan of theirs. Want to say Motley Crue but it might another band in that genre. Surprised nobody has said KISS... :pound:

Gotta give credit where credit is due...a few good songs, but a marketing atom bomb.

The guy that never gets his due, when it comes to shock rock, is Alice Cooper. Dude invented it in a way?

When I rank bands as "influential" I just look at the time period and how far ahead of other bands at the time they were...

Voice, piano w/ a jazzy rock influence in the early 70s...

I'm going here.
