Elway directed 5 teams to Super Bowls. That means something. But he also had a top ten defense in all five occasions. He also had Mike Shanahan as his offensive coordintor in 4 of those appearances. Statistically he was an average quarterback. He didn't complete greater than 58% of his passes until his 11th season. You could make a compelling argument that Shanahan made his career. With Shanahan, Elway had 174 touchdowns to 110 interceptions 6 pro bowl appearances and 4 Super Bowl appearances. Without him, he threw 126 touchdowns to 116 interceptions 3 pro bowls and one Super Bowl. Elway played 16 seasons. 8 with Shanahan, 8 without.

thinking about it, seems like a lot of ppl are offended by saying luck is the best prospect since manning. not to say he'll be anywhere near as good, but look at past 1st overal picks and luck appears better than everyone. carson palmer had one huge year, but he stunk it up before that.

maybe if ppl called luck a more athletic pennington people wouldn't get their panties in a bunch.

He is the best prospect since Peyton Manning. But that's not exactly saying much. Only Michael Vick is an adequate comparison in terms of being an anticipated #1 overall pick at QB. Every other QB #1 overall has had a clear knock of some kind.

To say that Elway was vastly overrated isn't to say he wasn't a HOF QB. But so is Troy Aikman, and you don't hear anyone talking about him as one of the greatest QBs of all time. In fact I'd argue Aikman was better but didn't last as long.
