Glad they didn't break the bank for Martinez.

As of right now, they're the highest payroll in baseball, I believe. Subject to change depending on who Arietta signs with.

Sox absolutely needed this one.

I'm gonna guess the hold up was the opt outs.

F%*%*O% Boras.

Yeah, I never thought a 34 year old David Price would opt out of 100+million, and I dont think a 32-33 year old DH, who no teams showed interest in this time around, will opt out either

If Martinez plays well, going into his age 32 season, after Harper/Machado reset the market, he'll opt out.

Never despised the Yankees for spending. Always despised the Yankees for giving Jeffrey Maier a key to the city, and employing Paul O'Neill

I don't know man. He's gotten pretty damn good the last few years-and he can opt out for the first time after next year. Time will tell. I hate him with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns, but Boras did a nice job for his client here.

And it's a front-loaded contract. If you don't think he'll opt out, that means you don't think he'll play well these next two seasons (which Dirt has said he would predict JD to win MVP if he went to the Sox). Would anyone really think that JD couldn't do better than 3/60 from ages 32-34? We won't be in a "next year's class is huge!" scenario at that point like we are now.

That seems to be the consensus, not so sure

The guy just came off a season, where he couldnt really be much better, and no teams showed interest

I just dont see what changes 2 years older, and only being a DH, limiting the amount of teams that could sign you

Price is different. If he hadn't gotten hurt last year, he would definitely be looking to opt out after this year barring injury. He still might. If he rebounds, he's looking at 4/127 from ages 33-36. Less likely than Martinez opting out, but definitely is a chance.

And Price's contract was more evenly spread that Martinez who will make 2/50 in the first two years and 3/60 in the last 3.

Then he wouldn't have negotiated the opt out in there. The opt out is player-friendly and is a way for the team to try to entice a player to sign without adding extra money. So if he wasn't going to opt out after playing well for 2 years, then he wouldn't have negotiated to get them included.

You know this is the deal I didnt wanna see since before last season even ended, it just made too much sense

But I always knew it would, just not enough teams involved for me to be convinced otherwise

Oh I think youre nuts.........In this current market? I dont think a 33 year old David Price would ever see 4/127

I mean, he would have to be like off the charts incredible, which IMO, those days are long gone

Solid, very good, still possible tho

And what changes in 2 years is the market and the asking price. All Martinez is going to want after 2019 is to beat 3 years/$60 million. Barring injury, he'll do that easily.

Makes such little sense to me

Phillies seem to be caught between total rebuild and trying to compete next season

Not a spot you wanna be
