Yeah, the Phillies have been on a hot streak with their free agent signings lately but there's definitely no guarantees.

The 4th (Texas Rangers), 5th (Philadelphia Phillies), and 7th (Houston Astros), highest payroll teams, are still in the post season.......
The Diamondbacks are 21st in team salary.
Buying a championship is still alive.

Wow this took an unexpected turn. Last week it seemed like the message was you can't buy a championship, and this week it seems like the opposite. Classic misdirect.

So dumb. What's the cutoff? 10th and higher, you bought it, 11th and lower it's legit? 15th?

I would say find the 20-30% above average payroll zone and those are the teams “buying” shit if you embrace that thinking.

Maybe it’s because I’m a big market fan but for that’s only a measure of how much ownership gives a shit and not “buying” a team. My team should be the 5th highest payroll or our fans will criticize them and not come.

I understand the sentiment behind it but to be honest it's more that fans of teams like the Royals and A's are tired of competing once in a blue moon when the bigger markets get to chase titles far more often.

The whole 'argument' falls apart when you notice that the top payroll teams don't win all that often compared to middle and even low ones. And that some low budget teams do pretty well like the Rays.

It's childish. When was the last time a team truly just went out and got a bunch of free agents and got a title? San Diego tried to do that...we see how that worked out. Even the dreaded Steinbrenner Yankees won their 90's titles mostly with homegrown talent.

I go back to the Marlins first championship in terms of somebody going out and acquiring payroll and then closing the deal.

Oh it does happen but not nearly as much as people bitch about. After all didn't the Yankees buy their championships in the 1920s by buying Babe Ruth? Or was that different?

If we look at the free agent era after 1973, who bought them besides the Marlins in 1997? Were the 1977-1978 Yankees like that? Before my time.

The New York Yankees have AVERAGED having the highest opening day team salary in the last 25 years.
and they've made the post season 20 of those seasons. And since 1996 they have won 5 World Series Championships.

The Dodgers have been in the post season 10 consecutive seasons......Number one in spending 6 out out of the last 10 seasons (ODS)
They have been no lower than 5th in spending in those 10 seasons. They have won their division 10 out the last 11 seasons.
Appeared in 3 World Series.

I'm amused at some genius posters who think that if all owners spent $300,000,000 on every MLB team, that all 32 teams would be contenders.
WRONG
There aren't that many great players to fill 32 rosters.
There aren't that many front line pitchers to fill 32 pitching staffs. (maybe 10 teams)
Then we could talk about attendance figures of 10 to 15 teams in MLB. (and TV ratings)
There are 12 teams in MLB that didn't average 25,000 fans at their home games. (four of them were playoff teams)
Four teams didn't average 20,000 fans.
Oakland had a total of 832,000 fans. (that wouldn't cover the budget for the lights and ground crew)

I’m waiting for the part of the thread where we talk about attendance figures for ten to fifteen teams.

Very excited for the TV ratings portion.

Yeah unfortunately none of those discussions will take place here. You'll have to attend the roundtable discussions being held at the Airport Ramada for that.

Being a Detroit Tiger's fan, I imagine you would be excited (if anybody watched the Tigers). There are PBS cooking shows that have better TV ratings than Tiger games. Even poorly watched NFL games have multiple times more people watch, than some MLB post season games.

Now, why would anybody think, money buys championships?
Cue the Ohtani contract talks.

There are a few high quality PBS cooking shows out there.

No Passport Required had a Detroit episode a little while back. That prolly hurt the Tigers viewership a bit.

And this year marked the first time we’ve ever had a flamingo in the state. A lot of eyes spent their free time birdwatching. Hoping for a glimpse of that pink dinosaur.
