I made a comment in the Vegas A’s thread that got me thinking. I mentioned that an argument could be made to place the A’s as a top 5 franchise all time.

Of course that is a loaded question. What factors in? Championships? HOFers? Division championships? Regular season wins? General fandom? Hollywood representation? Market size?

Using your own valuation, rank all 30 teams. Here is my ranking (I have given it some thought, but this is still essentially off the top of my head)…

Yankees
Cardinals
Dodgers
Giants

Braves
Reds
Red Sox
A’s

Cubs
Phillies
Tigers
Orioles
Pirates
Mets

White Sox
Blue Jays
Rangers
Astros
Twins
Royals

Angels
Mariners
Nationals
Brewers
Marlins
Rays
Diamondbacks
Guardians
Padres
Rockies

Where would you put the Rays if they win it all this year?

I think you could put the As as high as 3.

Only the Yankees and Cards have more WS.

Like the list. I’d have Houston a higher. And Seattle lower.

I think the Rays need to get out of Tampa in order for them to move up. Picking up a random ring isn’t much of a needle mover. Miami has 2 ring, but they are absolutely an also-ran org. The Cubs have 1 in the last 110 years or so, and they are high-ish on my list.

Seattle has Ichiro and Jr on their ledger. That definitely bumped them up the list. Houston was a perennial loser before the last 10 years. Switching leagues is a bad sign of their league-wide power as well.

Seattle had Randy Johnson too. And has never even made it to a WS. And only five franchises have a worse winning percentage.

Astros actually have a winning record alltime.

One of the things I like about them is Dewayne Staats has been the voice of Rays baseball from the beginning. I won’t say Staats is to Rays what Scully is to the Dodgers but I put him on the tier below that.

You are just using Staats to tell whatever story you want.

What could possibly compel you to put the rangers over the twins? Just wondering.

i did a quick and easy calculation based on arbitrary values i liked...

the one thing i would have liked to take into consideration but couldnt in this quick analysis was recent years vs pre expansion years...

But overall i think my list looks good...

Any list having the Phillies as the worst OG franchise, is a good list.

Why have Cleveland so high? They haven’t won in forever and haven’t had an impactful HOF since who, Paige? Being represented in “Major League” helps, but they were represented as a joke franchise, so I think that actually ends up being a net negative. They do have nice uniforms, so that certainly helps…

They are in the same tier. Hard to argue for/against any specific ranking within tiers.

but are they...LOL...

Looks like on mine and navamind the rangers are a bottom 5 team...
